The Essen-Überruhr grammar school is a grammar school in the south of Essen , named after the Essen-Überruhr district . It is currently attended by around 1,100 schoolchildren. As of 2009
history
The school was built in 1974. In 1998 two wings of the building were demolished and replaced by a new building. The GEÜ has a triple sports hall and a sports field .
The Essen-Überruhr grammar school has been a recognized UNESCO project school since February 5, 2009 . This makes it the second project school in Essen.
On November 2, 2009, the first confirmed case of " swine flu " was reported to a school in Essen.
The school
The language options include English , French , Russian , Spanish and Latin . The school has been offering the DELF exams since 2007 . Other offers include tactile writing courses with an IHK final exam as well as a wind instrument and a singer class.
There are numerous working groups at the school, such as the Licht- und Ton AG. Since 2010 there has also been a school medical service under the leadership of the Arbeiter Samariter Bundes Ruhr eV (ASB) . In the school medical service, students in grades 8 and 9 complete training courses at the ASB Regionalverband Ruhr every year.
With the introduction of the Abitur after twelve years , the proportion of afternoon classes increases. There is also an afternoon care program until 4 p.m., called 13plus, on four days of the week, Monday to Thursday.
There are regular student exchanges with the 1283 school in Moscow , the Lycée Anatole France in Lillers , the Collège Frédéric Joliot-Curie (Calonne-Ricouart) and the Collège Jacques Prévert (Houdain). A project to care for Brazilian street children in São Paulo is also supported.
Mold infestation
Shortly after the start of school in the 2008/2009 school year, the Stachybotrys chartarum mold was found behind a wall panel after a renovation of the science pavilion . The wing was closed to students and teachers. Shortly before the autumn break of 2008, the same mold was found in the art and music pavilion, which is at the other end of the school grounds. However, due to acute space problems, this wing was only locked in a storage room two weeks after the fungus was discovered.
On October 15, the last remaining pavilion was also closed. This meant that another four classrooms were eliminated. Since the computer room was no longer available, laptops were provided. However, representatives of the city of Essen promised to do something as soon as possible against the loss of the 19 classrooms. The lessons should therefore take place in containers.
At the beginning of March 2009 it was announced at a press conference that classes in suitable containers would be delayed until autumn. Several containers had been in the back school yard since the beginning of the year, but they were unused. The location of the former art and music wing, which was demolished during the 2008 Christmas holidays, has been fallow ever since.
The old wings of the building were also completely demolished until shortly after the end of the 2009 summer vacation. At the beginning of the 2009/2010 school year, the teaching containers were set up and prepared to the point where lessons could take place. The new building was originally supposed to be completed at the end of 2011; it was finally inaugurated in May 2012.
