The UNESCO School Essen is an advanced high school in Essen 's southeast district .
History and character
In 1964 the school was opened as a municipal advanced high school . In 1999 it was officially recognized as a UNESCO project school and three years later renamed the UNESCO School Essen.
As an advanced high school, the seventh grade is started here as an entry-level school. Accordingly, gifted students use this to switch from other types of school to a high school career. There is this opportunity again in entry-level 11 to take the Abitur in grade 13 (G9). So-called preparatory classes for acquiring German language skills were started in 1990 in order to give immigrant students from other nations the opportunity to step in from the side so that they can later go to regular classes. Students from around 40 different countries attend the UNESCO school.
