The Leibniz-Gymnasium is a municipal high school for girls and boys in secondary levels I and II in the Altenessen district of Essen with 1178 students who are taught by 77 teachers (2007/2008). This makes it one of the largest urban high schools in Essen.

history

In 1905 the school was founded as a high school for boys. Until the inauguration of the current school building in 1908, school operations took place in the old orphanage on Altenessener Straße. In the following years a secondary school - later an upper secondary school - was attached to the Altenessen secondary school, so that in 1928 an extension was necessary to accommodate 500 students in 18 classes. During the Second World War , the building was destroyed by bombing in 1943. It was rebuilt in self-help and in 1945 lessons could start again. In 1948 the school was renamed "Leibniz-Schule - Städtisches Neusprachliches Gymnasium in Essen-Altenessen". It was still a boys-only high school. Co-education only began in 1972. Due to the increasing number of pupils, the school building was expanded in 1974 and the school on Mallinckrodtstrasse was taken over as a branch in 1995.

School camp

Since the 1930s, the school has had its own school camp in Rhade , a rural district of the city of Dorsten , on the southern edge of the Münsterland . Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 come here every year to experience learning and life as a unit without the organizational constraints of school. The stays are intended to stimulate the social conditions and the learning climate in the classes. After extensive renovations in the years 1993–95, the school camp can now also be used for international meetings and congresses. The Landheim is also used at irregular intervals for unscheduled journeys for the upper grades and for meetings with old school students.

Trivia

One pupil took second place in the federal competition of the International Philosophy Olympiad in 2008 and received an honorable mention in the international decision.
