Hermann Schwengel

Hermann Schwengel (* 1949 in Rahden ; † December 7, 2014 ) was a German sociologist and university professor .

Life

Schwengel grew up in Wehe and graduated from high school in 1969 at Söderblom-Gymnasium in Espelkamp.

After studying philosophy , politics and education in Konstanz , Marburg and Zurich , Schwengel received his doctorate in 1978 at the Philipps University of Marburg on the revision of Marx's social theory . He was then an assistant professor at the Free University of Berlin . From 1985 to 1986 he conducted research at the City University of New York . In 1987 he received his habilitation with a thesis on political and social modernization in the United States. After a research stay at Lancaster University , he returned to the Free University of Berlin in 1990 as a senior assistant.

In 1994 he accepted the professorship for sociology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , which Heinrich Popitz previously held. In Freiburg he was, among other things, Dean of the Philosophical Faculty and Vice-Rector for Research. Most recently he headed the Institute of Sociology together with Ulrich Bröckling and Nina Degele . Schwengel retired in September 2014 . A little later he died after a short, serious illness.

Schwengel was a member of the Fundamental Values ​​Commission of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Cultural Policy of the Cultural Political Society . He was also co-editor of the journals Ästhetik & Kommunikation and Theory, Culture & Society .
