The love of his life - The Railway Man is a British - Australian war film by Jonathan Teplitzky from the year 2013 with Colin Firth , Jeremy Irvine , Nicole Kidman and Hiroyuki Sanada in the lead roles. The film is based on the autobiography "The Railway Man" by Eric Lomax .

While the film was released in the United States at the end of 2013, it didn't open in Germany until June 25, 2015.

action

During the Second World War , the British officer Eric Lomax was first captured by the Japanese and then taken to a POW camp, where he was forced to work on the Thailand-Burma Railway north of the Malay Peninsula . While in the camp, Lomax is tortured by the Kempeitai for building a radio receiver that enables prisoners to listen to BBC news. The torturers beat him up and use a hose to force water into his mouth until he almost drowns.

In 1980 Lomax met Patti while on a train ride, whom he married a little later. The marriage almost fails because Lomax is still suffering from wartime psychological trauma. His wife Patti wants to help him after Lomax's friend Finlay tells her about the terrible suffering in the camp. It is only when Finlay commits suicide that Lomax decides to seek out one of his living tormentors named Takashi Nagase and confront him with his past. He travels to Thailand, where Nagase runs a museum. Both sit at the table, but this time Lomax asks the questions. The situation comes to a head when Lomax places Nagase's arm in a bone breaking device. But Lomax hits the club next to Nagase's arm and spares him.

The Japanese says that the Japanese military leadership lied to them during the war. Lomax never gave up and told them the truth. Back in Scotland, Lomax receives a letter from Nagase in which he asks him to forgive him for his actions. Lomax travels to Thailand again, this time with his wife Patti. She becomes a witness when Lomax Nagase forgives.

A plaque at the end of the film informs viewers that Lomax and Nagase were friends until the end of their lives.

production

While Frank Cottrell Boyce was working on the script, he traveled with leading actor Firth to Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland to meet the now 91-year-old Eric Lomax.

Rachel Weisz was originally slated for the role of Lomax's wife Patti . However, this had to be canceled due to scheduling problems.

Filming of the film began in Edinburgh and North Berwick in East Lothian and St Monans in Fife in April 2012 and later continued in Thailand , Ipswich and Queensland .
