Simon van der Geest (2015)

Simon van der Geest (born February 12, 1978 in Gouda , South Holland Province , Netherlands ) is a Dutch writer . Since 2009 he has written five plays and five children's books , two of which are also available in German translation. Krasshüpfer, the German version of the play Spinder, premiered in 2015 at the State Theater Mainz .

The books by van der Geest available in German are The Summer In Which I Become Famous (without my parents noticing) (German 2011; original 2009: Geel Gras ) and Krasshüpfer (German 2016; im Original 2012: Spinder ).

For his literary work, he was awarded the Gouden Griffel (2011, 2013), the most important prize for children's and young adult literature in the Netherlands, twice in quick succession . The German press described Krasshüpfer as "disturbing and incredibly exciting"  ( Die Welt ), "thrilling, gripping and very unusual"  ( Deutschlandradio )   and as "another bravura piece"  ( Badische Zeitung ).

Life

Van der Geest studied theater pedagogy at the Arnhem University of the Arts . Because of his love for the writing of plays he then attended the dramatist program at the School of Arts in Utrecht . He writes stories and poems for children and gives theater courses for young people.

His debut The Summer In Which I Become Famous tells the adventures of Finja and Jantwan. The book received rave reviews in the national press and is due to be made into a film by producer Paul Voorthuysen and director Barbara Bredero.

In 2010 Dissus, van der Geest's version of the Odyssey for young people, was published. The illustrations are by Jan Jutte. The book received the CPNB's Golden Pen, the award for the best Dutch children's book of the year. The jury praised van der Geest's virtuoso language and the aptly described feelings. He was able to win the award again with his book Spinder .

In October 2014 it was announced that van der Geest had been appointed as the author of the children's boekenweek gift book for 2015. The title was Per ongelukt! . The illustrations come from Karst-Janneke Rogaar, who also illustrated Spinder .

In 2016 he was a member of the jury for The Extraordinary Book of the Children and Youth Program of the Berlin International Literature Festival .

Literary work

Geel Gras (2009) / The Summer That I Get Famous (Without My Parents Noticing) (2011)

Geel Gras is Van der Geest's debut and, like his subsequent books, was published by the Dutch publisher Querido. It tells the story of 11-year-old Finja, who is forgotten by her parents on a campsite.

Dissus (2010)

For Dissus , van der Geest was inspired by the Odyssey and won the Gouden stylus. This poetry book for young people was illustrated by Jan Jutte. In 2017 it was published by  Thienemann Verlag in a translation by Rolf Erdorf under the title  Dysseus .

Spinder (2013) / Krasshüpfer (2016)

Van der Geest was also awarded the Gouden stylus for Spinder . In 2016 the translation was published by Thienemann Verlag under the title Krasshüpfer . Mirjam Pressler did the translation.

Zapp Mattheus (2014)

With Zapp Mattheus van der Geest has the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach made accessible to young adults.

Spikerzwijen (2015) / The Abracadabra of Fishes (2019)

12-year-old Vonkie is visiting her grandfather's farm. She is sad because her parents are arguing and bored of her stay. But her grandfather Spijker tries to cheer her up by telling her stories about the past; about how he went on adventures and played pranks with his five brothers. But Vonkie notices that he is leaving out certain details. Why is he no longer in contact with his favorite brother and why is she not allowed near the old mill? Vonkie and her cousin Sven try to solve her grandfather's secret.
In 2019 the translation was published by
Thienemann Verlag under the title The Abracadabra of Fish . Mirjam Pressler did the translation.

Via ongelukt! (2015)

“Per ongelukt!” Is a book by van der Geests for the Kinderboekenweek, which was illustrated by Karst-Janneke Rogaar. The mother of 10-year-old Ro has been jailed innocently and now her son and his best friend Archie are trying to free her from the island in the Wadden Sea. Together they come up with different plans. Will they be able to save Ros mother from tents with a hot air balloon? For this book, Van der Geest took inspiration from nature, science and technology.
