His cellmate was a Rastafarian who encouraged him to start reading and take care of his education.

Wheatle has commented on the riots in Brixton in the past, including in 2006 on the BBC program Battle of Brixton . His early works are based on his life as a teenager in Brixton and the years he was under the care of the social service.

His young adult novel, Liccle Bit. The little one from Crongton was on the longlist of the Carnegie Medal 2016.

The 2016 book, The Knights of Crongton , won the 50th Guardian Children's Fiction Prize . SF Said , one of the judges, said of the book: "Poetic, rhythmic and unique, Wheatle's literature is reinventing English literature with an eerie panache. Although Crongton was invented by him, it shows parallels with the situation in many cities , not just in England but worldwide. The Knights of Crongton is an important novel, by an important voice in British children's literature. "

For the "Crongton" trilogy with Who needs a heart when it can be broken , The Knights of Crongton and Liccle Bit - The Little One from Crongton , Wheatle was awarded the Lynx of the Month in August 2019 together with the translator Conny Lösch .
