The books published by Wilkoń in Germany were written by different authors, including the following: Piotr Wilkoń (8), Eveline Hasler (2), P. Buxil (1), Daniel Defoe (1), Uwe Friesel (1), Janosch (1), Irina Korschunow (1), Wladimir Majakowskij (1), Paul Schaaf (1), Robert Wolfgang Schnell (1), Günter Spang (2), Robert Louis Stevenson (1), Stanisław Szydłowski (1), Mark Twain (1). Wilkoń also wrote the text for three of the books he illustrated: Minka and the Wild Horses (1976), I smell honey! (1985) and Ms. Drosselmann (2002). Wilkoń also provided the basic story idea for the text for three of the books he illustrated: Mister Brown's cat (1988), Me, the cat (1990) and Little Wolf (1993). At Jussuf a tiger wants to be (1978) and The Little Shepherd and the Big Robber (1988) Wilkoń wrote the text together with a co-author. With 25 publications, the majority of Wilkoń's 68 books have been published in German by Nord-Süd Verlag . Bitter (1) , Gimpel (1), Holz (1), Otto Maier (1) and Schweizer Volksbuchgemeinde (1).
The availability of Wilkoń's books published in German is very poor. Currently only four of his books are available: Lion Children (1968), Yusuf Wants To Be a Tiger (1978), Whom the Elephant Shakes Hands (1982) and Tallula - Queen of the Night (2012). All other books are out of print and only available as second-hand books.
Quotes from Wilkoń
Wilkoń says about the art of illustration:
“It's easy if you know some things. First you have to know what you want to paint looks like: a person, a fish, a bird, a leaf or an animal. Then how it moves: how it runs, crawls, sneaks or flies. For many, this is the end of the learning path. But some go further and can paint the times of day, the moon as it shines, a bird that sings, they can even paint worry and joy, fear and courage. Few can paint sleep, rest, and even the smell and taste of a fruit. If you know all of this, you still have to know how to put the text and illustration together so that they complement each other and a tension in the book grows like in the theater and everything gets in the right time and proportion. "
Press review
About the artistic importance of Wilkoń
“Józef Wilkoń is without a doubt one of the most productive and original artists of our time. For more than five decades he has been able to pull both children and adults under the spell of his animal pictures. Pictures that now adorn more than 200 books and have earned him recognition and sympathy all over the world. "
"On February 12th, Józef Wilkoń, the greatest (no ifs or buts) illustrator in Poland, celebrated his 80th birthday."
“Józef Wilkoń is a celebrated artist in Poland. He is the father of the current Polish children's book illustration. "
The crane with one leg (1963)
“For children who already have a sense for punch lines, the fable, based on an old Italian novel, tells how you can get out of an unpleasant affair if you are not at a loss for a funny answer. Illustrations of exquisite colors, full of grace and humor correspond perfectly with the subtle background of the text. "
Treasure Island (1972)
"The second book edited by Scherf is also pleasing due to its extremely happy correspondence between text and picture: Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island , illustrated by Jozef Wilkon as dramatically as realistically."
Noah's Ark (1992)
“How then, what then - another Noah's Ark book on the countless ones that already exist and which, precisely because the incident is so attractive to paint (exotic animal studies! Moving seascapes!), Grows from year to year Multiply specimens? Yes and no. Of course, this is also the well-known story, nothing essential has been invented, nothing has been left out. What is striking about the Wilkorian version, however, are imaginary captions that appear in the mind of the beholder by themselves; succinct and haunting like the subtitles in silent films, which artfully create mood beyond the mere illustration of individual plot sequences. [...] If you want to show your children photo-realistic rhinos, tigers or hippos, you should better read a natural history book. But if you want to offer them the story of a sensational survival campaign, you'll get their money's worth. And maybe he will reap drawings that fifteen years later look like a time machine. "
The Four Children of the Earth (1992)
“Wilkoń wouldn't be Wilkoń if he didn't take advantage of this opportunity; Astonishment and delight are guaranteed. Too much of an artist to fall into the meticulousness of non-fiction books, he paints embers and wind, the march of greenery and the glaring autumnal economy with pastel chalks, and a black, mysterious cricket chases through the nights of the tired summer on a hay horse. The hills open up to let in the rainbow, and the tree house of the crows with its open shops is reminiscent of Magritte's "The Voice of the Blood". "
Tallula - Queen of the Night (2012)
"A gloomy, but beautiful, poetic and ultimately, of course, harmless picture book by the old master Jozef Wilkon, who congenially staged the story of Tallula, the little bat" written down by Adam Jaromir "."
“It's a book for connoisseurs. Because Tallula is the story of a self-discovery. [...] And, as is so often the case, when you've finally found your milieu, it works with your neighbors too: light-shy animals become Tallula's new friends. Woodlice, cockroaches, deep-sea octopus. What could not be invented for new friends with children! You could have a monster evening, for Mardi Gras, for Halloween and in general, whenever exclusion is the topic, the Tallula book would be the first choice - because often everything is just a question of the direction in which you are looking, says Tallula and hangs upside down. Great, dark book full of love! "
