Walter Scherf

Walter Scherf (born June 11, 1920 in Mainz , † October 25, 2010 in Munich ; pseudonym : tejo ) was a German writer, composer, children's and youth literature - and fairy tale researcher .

Life

Scherf grew up in Mainz and Wuppertal as the son of a locksmith. In Wuppertal he became a member of a DPSG group . Between 1946 and 1949 Scherf studied physics , mineralogy and musicology at the University of Göttingen . At the same time he founded and led youth groups and published magazines that were particularly popular with young people. During this time he lived in the tower house of the Göttingen Johanniskirchturm . In 1949 he became federal leader of the German Youth Union . His trip name was tejo. During this time he also wrote The Great Stock Book , which is a classic in Bundischen groups.

He left Göttingen in 1949 without a degree and from then on worked in Opladen as a typesetter, magazine editor , proofreader and publishing director. From 1957 to 1982 he was director of the International Youth Library (IJB) in Munich and networked this institution internationally. In the times of the “ Cold War ” , he attached particular importance to the inclusion of the Eastern Bloc countries in the exchange of children's literature and children's book illustrations. Shortly before his retirement, he initiated the relocation of the IJB to Blutenburg Castle in Obermenzing .

In addition to his scientific publications and editing activities, he was also active as a translator. His best known translation is The Little Hobbit by JRR Tolkien , which appeared in 1957. Shortly after the Second World War, this was suggested to him by the German painter Horus Engels on a youth trip. In 1965 Scherf submitted his own translation of Charles Perrault's fairy tales ; In the same year a complete edition of the fairy tales by Ludwig Bechstein was published, commented on by him .

From 1957 to 1963 Scherf was responsible for the magazine for youth literature and from 1967 to 1968 for the magazine for youth literature . Furthermore, he wrote many well-known travel songs of today's Bündische Jugend , for example The Rain Woman , No maple grows here , the rain hums and pines in the wind ; some of them are considered modern folk songs . His book Schwedenfahrt had a formative effect on the large-scale journeys of the Bund groups of the post-war youth movement.

After his retirement in 1982 he devoted himself mainly to fairy tale research; in the same year he submitted the encyclopedia of magic tales . He continued his studies in pedagogy , psychology and folklore at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , which he had begun in the 1960s . He received his doctorate in 1986 - at the age of 66 - with the dissertation The Challenge of the Demon: Form and Function of Horrible Fairy Tales . After that he was a lecturer for folk narrative research in Innsbruck and Munich until 2001 . His main work as a fairy tale researcher is the two-volume fairy tale dictionary from 1995.
