Helge Gerndt

Helge Gerndt (born September 16, 1939 in Dresden ) is a German folklorist .

Life

Gerndt first studied folklore, German and geography at the Universities of Kiel and Vienna . In 1966 he received his doctorate from Kiel University with the dissertation Fliegender Holländer und Klabautermann. Legendary figures of the sea . 1973 followed the habilitation thesis at the University of Munich : Vierbergelauf. Present and history of a Carinthian custom . In 1979 he became a professor of folklore at the University of Regensburg . In the following year he was appointed to the chair of folklore at the University of Munich. He has been an emeritus since 2004 .

Between 1987 and 1991 he was the first chairman of the German Society for Folklore (DGV), and since 1994 he has been co- editor of the Encyclopedia of Fairy Tales .

Gerndt has published on cultural theory and methodology , the history of science , narrative and custom research , contemporary everyday culture and the cultural meaning of images .

In 2020 Gerndt will be awarded the European Fairy Tale Prize for his life's work .
