Susie Morgenstern
Susie Morgenstern (born March 18, 1945 in Newark , New Jersey ; maiden name Susie Hoch ) is a French children's and youth author.
Life
Susie Morgenstern's parents were Sylvia Needleman and Meyer Hoch. The mother's parents, Dora and Max Needleman, were born in Odessa and worked in the USA in the textile industry. The Jewish family with three daughters Sandra, Susie and Effie lived in Brooklyn . Susie Morgenstern's mother is said to have been the first woman to get a driver's license in Brooklyn. At that time the parents had a DeSoto , but they lived in relatively modest circumstances, because Morgenstern states that there was no money to buy books. However, the mother instilled in her daughters self-confidence and a strong sense of fashion. The father, on the other hand, was rather introverted and died early; he often withdrew from his exuberant daughters.
Morgenstern studied in the United States until 1967 and temporarily in Jerusalem , where she met her future husband and finally came to France through her marriage to the French mathematician Jacques Morgenstern from Nice . The couple married in 1966 in Verona ( New Jersey ). In 1972 in Nice she wrote a doctoral thesis on comparative literature with the title Les fantasmes chez l'écrivain juif contemporain . In 1984 she began her career as an author and illustrator for books for children and young people at the publishing house L'école des loisirs in Paris. Morgenstern taught English at the University of Nice . Her husband Jacques passed away in April 1994. She has two daughters with him (* 1967 and * 1971). In Nice she took part in building a Jewish-liberal community.
