Chen Jianghong
Chen Jianghong ( Chinese 陈江洪 , Pinyin Chén Jiānghóng ; first name Jianghong , last name Chen , * 1963 in Tianjin , People's Republic of China ) is a Sino - French painter , author and illustrator . As an author and illustrator, he has worked on 33 picture books, seven of which have been translated into German. His most famous books include Le cheval magique de Han Gan (2004; German Han Gan and the wonder horse , 2009) and Mao et moi (2008; German At Grandfather's Hand - My Childhood in China , 2009). For his books, Chen has received important international prizes in the field of children's and youth literature , including the Prix Sorcières (2004) and the German Youth Literature Prize (2005). In the press, his books have been referred to as “a work of art” ( The time about Han Gan and the wonder horse ), “Stroke of genius as a picture book” and “Masterpiece” ( FAZ about An Grandfather's Hand - My Childhood in China ). His new book Le petit pêcheur et le squelette was published in France in 2013 and was published in Germany in 2014 under the title Der kleine Fischer Tong . Chen lives in Paris.
life and work
Childhood, adolescence and young years
Chen was born in the Chinese port city of Tianjin and grew up with his two older sisters with his grandparents because both parents were employed. The time he grew up was marked by the Cultural Revolution . Chen Jianghong's family was relatively poor, so he had little use of books or paper. From 1979 to 1982 he studied painting in Tianjin at the Decorative Art School and graduated in 1987 from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing . He then traveled by train across Asia and Europe to Paris, where he has lived and worked as a freelance painter in the traditional Chinese style since 1987. In 1988 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris.
Career in France
In addition to his work as a painter, Chen Jianghong has also been the author and illustrator of various picture books since 1995 . He made his debut as an illustrator with Un cheval blanc n'est pas un cheval - Cinq énigmes chinoises (1995), his debut as an illustrator and author with La légende du cerf-volant (1997). To date, Chen Jianghong has been involved in 33 picture books - 11 books as an author and illustrator and 22 books exclusively as an illustrator.

In France, the books with Chen Jianghong's participation appear under the name of Chen Jiang Hong . Almost all of Chen Jianghong's books have been published in France by the Paris publisher l'école des loisirs. In addition to French, Chen Jianghong's books have so far been published in ten languages (Basque, Chinese, Danish, German, English, Italian, Catalan, Dutch, Swedish, Spanish).
Career in Germany
So far eight books by Chen have appeared in German translation, in which he appeared both as an author and as an illustrator: Zhong Kui - A visit to the Peking Opera (2001; French Zhong Kui - La terreur des forces du mal , 2001), Han Gan and the Wonder Horse (2004; French Le cheval magique de Han Gan , 2004), The Tiger Prince (2005, French Le Prince Tigre , 2005), Young Eagle (2006; French Petit Aigle , 2003), Lian (2007; French Lian , 2004), At Grandfather's Hand - My Childhood in China (2009; French Mao et moi , 2008), The Little Fisherman Tong (2014; French Le petit pêcheur et le squelette , 2013) and I will move mountains ! (2015; French Sann , 2014). The books have found their publishing home in Germany at the Moritz Verlag in Frankfurt. Five of these books were translated into German by Erika Klewer and Karl A. Klewer, An Grandfather's Hand - My Childhood in China , The Little Fisherman Tong and I Will Move Mountains! by Tobias Scheffel . Zhong Kui - A visit to the Peking Opera and Young Eagle are only available in second-hand copies. In addition to the six books by Moritz Verlag, I will perform miracles (Text: Susie Morgenstern , Illustration: Chen Jianghong, translation: Monika Hahn-Prölss, French: Je ferai des miracles , 2006) was published by Bloomsbury Verlag in Berlin in 2007 .

Others
For his services to the picture book, Chen is praised in the German-language and international feature pages and has also received various awards, including the Prix Sorcières for Hatchiko, chien du Tokyo in 2004 and the German Youth Literature Prize in the picture book category for Han Gan and the wonder horse in 2005 . In 2007 the picture book museum of the city of Troisdorf presented various works by him under the title Chen Jianghong: Illustrations and Paintings , which were also shown in various other locations in Germany. The short documentary Cultural Revolution for Children (2009) by Andreas Platthaus and Andreas Brand sheds light on the background to the making of An Grandfather's Hand - My Childhood in China . Chen Jianghong's extensive painterly work has been presented internationally in various exhibitions, including in London, New York, Paris, Dubai, Shenzhen, Abu Dhabi, Tokyo, Shanghai, Strasbourg and Geneva, and is in the possession of various private and public collections in Europe, Asia and America. From November 2011 to April 2016, Chen opened the Lotus Rouge studio in Berlin-Charlottenburg . In June 2012 he opened the exhibition Rencontre - Sowa & Chen in the studio , which juxtaposes the works of Chen Jianghong and Michael Sowa .

Zhong Kui - La terreur des forces du mal (2001) / Zhong Kui - A visit to the Peking Opera (2001)
“His portrayal of a boy's visit to the Peking Opera made it a great opera for him, full of drama and mysterious powers. Among the new publications this year, the book is an absolute exception. Of course, you can feel European influence here. The integration of writing into the picture, which is necessary for this narrative genre, is necessary for this. Nevertheless, the illustrations, which are thrown on rice paper using traditional ink, are permeated by a magic that not only conjures up a completely distant world, but also one that is only articulated in encrypted characters. Petit Aigle (2003) / Young Eagle (2006)
“The way Chen puts this straightforward story into pictures is actually amazing. More than before, he uses color as a mood factor. In this way he creates a magical little cycle of the seasons in four pictures - one of the most common motifs in Asian art. And when he stages the boy's training on a double page without resorting to any of our familiar graphical means for dynamics, simply by stringing fighting and meditation poses in front of a red wall, then this training culminates in a large picture, when boy and eagles are shown from below against the deep blue sky - as if they were both flying. For this picture of the boy we read the sentence: “With this he believed that he had reached perfection.” And we believe that as readers too. But then Chen continues on the next page: "Ten years later, Master Yang said to him: 'You don't know anything yet.'" For Chinese ears, such a narrative is not even ironic, but simply taken for granted: Perfection takes time. But for our ears it's a terrific comic effect. Chen knows this - as he knows about all the difficulties in the confrontation between Far Eastern aesthetics and Western readership and creates sparks from them. Hardly anything can therefore bring us closer to ancient China in such a plausible way as his books. "

“With this sophisticated technique, Chen Jianghong succeeded in creating landscapes that are highly transparent and poetic. [...] The dramaturgical implementation of the plot in pictures is terrific: large tableaus spread across a double page, on other pages several pictures merge, separated only by hand-drawn ink lines, similar to paintings on Chinese screens. Then again the plot overturns and one picture joins the next without transition. When things get really fast, successive movements are shown in a single tableau, like when Lian tumbles out of the lotus blossom and swirls through the air. [...] The colors are modeled on the traditional pigments of Chinese painting: Indigo, yellow, vermilion and malachite green dominate. However, they were seldom applied as richly and brightly as here. “Chen Jianghong, who has already attracted attention in this country with Han Gan and the wonder horse , is a master at depicting animals.
