Marcin Szczygielski (born May 28, 1972 in Warsaw ) is a Polish writer , journalist , graphic artist and member of the Polish Writers' Association .

life and work

He made his debut in 2003 with a satirical novel entitled PL-BOY , in which the author described his six years of experience working on the editorial board of the Polish edition of Playboy , where he was artistic director. This book quickly became a bestseller, much like the sequel, Wiosna PL-BOYa, published a year later .

Other novels such as Nasturcje i ćwoki and Farfocle namiętności have cemented his rank as a popular author. Berek attracted the greatest media attention in Poland . This story of the neighboring war between a young gay and an older, ultra-conservative Catholic woman became a bestseller in a flash. A year later, Szczygielski adapted this book for the stage. This adaptation has been performed successfully in the Warsaw Kwadrat Theater for more than six years ( Berek was performed for the 500th time in 2015 ). In 2010 the novel Bierki was published - the second volume of the Kroniki Nierówności cycle , which began with Berek . Next, in 2011 , Szczygielski published Poczet Królowych polskich . This story about women from three generations of the Król family was inspired by the life of Ina Benita, the Polish film star of the 1930s . Poczet Królowych polskich was nominated for the Srebrny Kałamarz Literature Prize in 2012 .

In 2014 the horror novel Sanato was published, which tells about events that took place in a sanatorium for tuberculosis sufferers in Zakopane in 1931 .

In 2013 the publishers Agora SA , Instytut Wydawniczy Latarnik and Oficyna Wydawnicza As published a monograph entitled Filipinki - to my! By Marcin Szczygielski . Ilustrowana historia pierwszego polskiego girlsbandu published. This is a comprehensive publication about the first Polish girl band Filipinki . This monograph contains more than 500 photos, 300 press articles and a CD with 24 previously unpublished songs by the band. It is a particularly important publication for Szczygielski - his mother Iwona Racz-Szczygielska was one of the singers in the Filipinki group for 12 years , the most famous Polish youth band of the 1960s in the GDR , the Soviet Union and Poland.

The separate field of activity of Marcin Szczygielski 's literary work includes children's and youth literature . In the same year another novel was published for the young reader Za niebieskimi drzwiami , which won the 2011 Dong Literature Prize (formerly Children's Best Seller of the Year ), awarded by IBBY. Fragments of this novel were published in 2013 in the textbooks for the Polish language Między nami , among others. A for the 5th grade of elementary school. Similar to Czarny Młyn , this book was included in the secondary catalog of school readings and filmed in 2014. In 2013 the novel Czarownica piętro niżej was published and in 2014 it won the Zielona Gąska literary prize - awarded by the Konstanty Ildefons Galczynski Foundation. In 2014 bookstores continued the adventures of Maja - the protagonist of the novels Czarownica piętro niżej and Tuczarnia motyli .




Marcin Szczygielski's plays are an integral part of the repertoire of many private and municipal theaters across Poland.

Szczygielski worked as a graphic artist with magazines such as Playboy , Voyage , Pani , Newsweek Polska and Nowa Fantastyka . Since his debut as a writer, he has also been responsible for the image design in his publishing house Oficyna Wydawnicza AS , as well as in the publishing house Instytut Wydawniczy Latarnik , where he is the artistic director. He is the designer of most of the book covers and the graphic designer of most of his books.
