Frances Hardinge
Frances Hardinge (* 1973 in Kent ) is a British writer who publishes novels for young people with elements of fantasy .
Life
Frances Hardinge was born in Kent, where she grew up. Allegedly, at the age of four, she already dreamed of becoming a writer. She studied English at the University of Oxford ( Somerville College ), where she was the founding member of an authoring workshop . Her actual writing career began when she won a short story magazine writing competition. Shortly thereafter, she wrote the novel Fly By Night in her spare time and, with the encouragement of a friend, presented it to the editors at Macmillan.
Fly By Night (dt. The Lady of Words . 2006) became a success that won the Branford Boase Award in 2006, was a candidate for the Guardian Awards and was on the list of the School Library Journal's Best Books . Her other books and short stories were also on various shortlists of other prizes. When her first novel was published, she signed a contract for three subsequent volumes. In 2015 she received the British Fantasy Award for the Roman Cuckoo Song .
The author maintains a bizarre appearance with black men's hats, the collection of which she dedicates a gallery on her website, and ancient clothing including men's shirts and vests. She lives in Oxford .
