Tiberio Mitri (born July 12, 1926 in Trieste , † February 12, 2001 in Rome ) was an Italian boxer and actor .

Life

Mitri began a career as a professional boxer in 1946; In 1948 he became Italian middleweight champion, the following year he won the title of European champion in this weight class. On July 12, 1950, he lost a world championship fight against Jack LaMotta in a hard-fought decision. In 1954 he was again European champion, but lost the title again on his next defense. In September 1957 he ended his sporting career.

Mitri was married to actress Fulvia Franco - the condition of their marriage was allegedly in defense of his title in the fight against Jean Stock  - with whom he has a son born in 1951 who died of an overdose at a relatively young age. Relations with the film industry intensified after Mitri's film debut in 1952 in I tre corsari ; by 1970 he appeared in around 25 films in supporting roles, who had divorced Franco in 1954. Mitri also found opportunities to perform on television. After 1970 it became quieter around him; some tragic family events and increasingly increasing physical and psychological problems came to light alongside the long-term effects of his boxing career. From 1989 on he played a role again; in the television series Classe di ferro he was seen as an ex-boxer who now lives from pizza making. In 2001 Mitri died when he was hit by a train.

A film adaptation of his life as a miniseries entitled Tiberio Mitri: Il campione e la miss hit the headlines in March 2011 when a relative prevented the full broadcast of the biography.

Mitri was married a second time and had a daughter born in 1967 who died of AIDS .
