action

Two Confederate soldiers, Jerry Brewster and Ken Seagall, are on the run with significant sums of money stolen from the Uniates when they are tracked down by a squad of soldiers. Jerry offers to be arrested; Ken, who escapes with the booty, promises to take care of Jerry's family. After five years in a labor camp, Jerry returns home but finds his house abandoned. Seagall has become a wealthy and powerful landowner and employs a gang of thugs around leader Gracía Mendez to advance his interests. Jerry's wife died some time ago, his son Tim has to work as a stable boy at Seagall and thinks his father is dead too.

With the help of a mysterious stranger who calls himself Winnie Getz, Jerry can sneak into Seagall's ranch under the name "Jim Houston" with difficulty and with a few setbacks, gradually eliminating Mendez's gang and defeating Mendez and Seagall in the decisive battle. Getz turns out to be a government agent on the hunt for the missing money. After Seagall's demise, Getz also testifies to Brewster's death and thus enables "Jim Houston" a new life as sheriff of his now peaceful hometown.

criticism

“A Western all'Italiana with, apart from a spectacular look and gaudy action scenes, an impressive use of the exaggerated genre motifs. With a bit of originality and a successful story an example of good work ”, judged the Segnalazine Cinematografiche. The Cinérévue also praised the director as “lively and visually striking the right tone”. In contrast, the lexicon of international film saw only a “brutal spaghetti western with the usual vengeance”. The Evangelische Film-Beobachter comes to a similar assessment : “Swiftly staged and acted western ripper of Italian origin with numerous, partly avoidable hardships. Because of the completely twisted legal opinion that stamps a thief as a martyr, we reject the film for young people and cannot recommend it to adults either. "

Remarks

In Italy alone the film grossed 529 million lire .

It is disputed whether Piero Regnoli , who usually hides behind it, acted under the pseudonym Dean Craig for the script ; some suspect Piero Pierotti - although the pseudonym is also used years after his death.

Gino interprets the film song “Home to my Love” ; the Italian version is called "Quel giorno verrà ...".
