Martina Schradi

Martina Schradi (/ ʃʁadi /; * 1972 ) is a German comic artist and author from Nuremberg . She is known for Oh, is that so ?! - LGBTI biographical comic reports .

Career

Martina Schradi studied psychology in Erlangen and Amsterdam and, after working for a number of years as a psychologist, communication designer and media author, in Nuremberg and Stuttgart . She started working in comics and self-published several mini-comics. In 2013 she started the comic project Oh, that's it ?! .

That's the way it goes?!

Martina Schradi collects true stories from LGBTI * under the motto “Oh, that's how it is ?!” and draws biographical comics from them. Topics of the stories include coming out in the family, at school and at work, dealing with gender roles and gender-typical expectations, rainbow families , support, friendship and love among LGBTI * people, questions of identity and experiences of discrimination . A first book was published in 2014, a second in 2018. Many of the comics can be seen online and are available in German, English, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. The comics are part of an anti-discrimination project that was funded by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth as part of the federal program Promote Tolerance - Strengthening Competence , by the Human Rights Office of the City of Nuremberg and by the Hannchen Multipurpose Foundation . Martina Schradi and Christine Burmann wrote a presentation of the project under Oh, that's it ?! An anti-discrimination project on LGBTI * also published for schools in the anthology Teaching Gender . Here the authors describe how the comics encourage discussion of the LGBTI * topic and how they can be used in workshops for schoolchildren, (prospective) teachers and multipliers.

Martina Schradi published the Oh, is that how it is ?! -Comics also in a traveling exhibition that has meanwhile been shown in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and parts of Finland, Tunisia, Italy, Belgium, Canada, Russia and Ukraine. Since 2015 she has had the opportunity to present her work at larger events such as the ProutAtWork conference. That's the way it goes?! is now also used at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg at conferences and workshops in teacher training. A number of other events were carried out in the project, which Martina Schradi documents in a blog.
