Hannchen Multipurpose Foundation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hannchen-Mehr Zweck-Stiftung (HMS) is a non-profit foundation under civil law based in Berlin , which has set itself the task of supporting cultural and emancipatory projects of the lesbian and gay movement. The HMS is subject to foundation supervision by the Berlin Senate Department for Justice in accordance with the provisions of the Berlin Foundation Act. In 2013 the subtitle of the foundation was changed to “the gay and lesbian foundation for queer movements”; this acknowledged the fact that in the previous years there had been an increasing number of applications from the LGBTIQ area ; In 2014, the purpose of the foundation was expanded in this regard.

history

Andreas Meyer-Hanno , gay activist ("Hannchen Mehr Zweck"), university professor and opera director, made large parts of his private assets available in 1991 as foundation capital for the establishment of HMS. The foundation was established in the same year.

Meyer-Hanno was closely connected to the German gay movement and, for decades, pursued the goal of expanding the social scope of action for lesbians and gays and permanently consolidating the foundations for an emancipatory lesbian and gay movement.

He was involved in the founding of various organizations and initiatives. In addition to the HMS, Homosexual Self-Help eV is of particular importance. It can be regarded as the predecessor organization of the HMS and was launched in 1980. The two organizations work closely together.

After his death in 2006, Andreas Meyer-Hanno considered the HMS in his will; Together with additional endowments and an inheritance in 2016, the foundation capital now amounts to over 2 million euros. The foundation's investment strategy is based on two principles: maintaining the value of the foundation's assets and the sustainability of the investment. Since 2011, hms has been participating in the Transparent Civil Society initiative, whose participants undertake to disclose in a certain format which goals their organization is pursuing, where the funds come from, how they are used and who makes the decisions.

Funding by the HMS

As a non-profit foundation, the HMS only supports applications from organizations that have been recognized as non-profit and particularly worthy of support, usually registered associations from the area of the lesbian and gay movement. In 2014, the purpose of the statutes of the HMS was expanded to include the passage "Education about the phenomenon of homosexuality always includes dealing with gender categories such as transgender and intersexuality." to let.

HMS obtains the funds from the foundation's investment income and from donations that are tax-deductible. Funding of around 40,000 euros is currently distributed annually. The grant per project is usually between 500 and 5,000 euros. Since the foundation was founded, more than 400 projects have been supported with around 600,000 euros (as of January 2018).

The funds are awarded exclusively as grants, the content of the funding applications must be covered by the foundation's purpose. The foundation's award guidelines stipulate that the applicants have to contribute their own contributions to the project, which must be fully taken into account in the settlement. Application forms can be downloaded from the HMS website.

The proportion of applications from a broad spectrum of the LGBTIQ movement has grown steadily over the years compared to applications from the gay movement. The composition of the foundation's board of directors has changed accordingly: it now includes a lesbian woman, three gay men and a queer trans man.

A thematic fund was set up in 2006 through a donation from the historian Wolfram Setz : the Karl Heinrich Ulrichs Fund. With the proceeds of this fund and earmarked donations, HMS supports initiatives to research, document and present the history of homosexuals .

The David Kato Fund was set up in 2013 through a donation from Josef Schnitzbauer . The focus of this fund is on educating people about the situation of LGBTIQ people in countries with persecution pressure and supporting people and groups who are fighting homophobia in these countries.
