Carll Cneut (born August 1, 1969 in Roeselare ) is a Belgian illustrator and writer . Since 1996 he has illustrated 41 picture books , children's books and books for young people , nine of which are also available in German translation. For his literary work he was awarded the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs (2009), the Gouden Griffel (2009) and the Zilveren Penseel Award (2003/2010). Carll Cneut lives in Ghent .

Life

Carll Cneut was born in 1969 in Roeselare on the Franco-Belgian border. He also spent his childhood there with his parents and two younger siblings. His father, who introduced him to drawing at a young age and with whom he often used to paint Mickey Mouse figures, died when Carll C was nine years old. After that, Cneut made it his business to teach his two sisters to draw.

After Cneut wanted to become a circus artist and then a baker, he decided instead to study graphic design at the Saint-Lucas Arts School in Ghent, the city where he still lives and works today. After completing his studies, Cneut started to work in an advertising agency, where he mainly dealt with advertising campaigns for packaging and food and did not yet intend to become an illustrator. In 1996, Cneut met the sister of his current publisher De Eenhoorn, who was also active in the advertising industry. While they were talking about a campaign, an old illustration by Cneut caught her eye, and she suggested that he draw some illustrations for her brother's children's magazine. Cneut wasn't very interested at first, but when he got in touch with the publisher, he decided to take the job.

Not long after the magazine with Cneut's illustrations was out, Cneut got the first request for a book. Varkentjes van Marsepein (translated “marzipan pig ”) was Cneut's illustration debut and was created in collaboration with the Flemish author Geert De Kockere, with whom Cneut later published six other children's books, mainly children's books in verse form. It wasn't until the age of 30 that Cneut realized that he wanted to work full-time as an illustrator. The book that led Cneut to this realization was Willy . In Willy is about an elephant who admires the various characteristics that make each person unique. In contrast to the first three books that Cneut had illustrated, which had all been poetry books, Willy was the first epic book. Cneut said in an interview that Willy was the first book in which he had fully understood the profession of illustrator and also made it clear to him what kind of illustrator he wanted to be in the future.

At the end of 2000, Cneut worked full-time as an illustrator, mainly in the field of children's literature . He made his debut as a writer in 2002 when his publisher brought out The Amazing Love Story of Mr Morf , which Cneut wrote and illustrated. Since 2005 Cneut has been teaching at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. In 2015, Cneuts opened the exhibition In my Head in Gent, which featured original drawings from The Golden Cage and How to Draw Birds , and which was a complete success with over 50,000 visitors in six months.

In 2016 he was a member of the jury for The Extraordinary Book of the Children and Youth Program of the Berlin International Literature Festival .

Artistic influences

Cneut names the Belgian expressionists Gustave Van de Woestijne, James Ensor and Edgard Tytgat as the main influences on his style as an illustrator and author . Other influences from illustrators were, for example, Arthur Rackham , Gustave Doré and the Dutchman Anton Pieck , who dealt with the great storytellers. Cneut's enthusiasm for the American artist and illustrator Brad Holland motivated Cneut to paint his illustrations with the correct color.

Literary work

Varkentjes van Marsepein

Carll Cneut's first picture book "Varkentjes van Marsepein" was published on October 1, 1996 by the Belgian publisher De Eenhoorn in Dutch and has 43 pages. Cneut's picture book Een straatje zonder AD was published on March 15, 1997 by the Belgian publisher De Eenhoorn in Dutch and comprises 32 pages. The book was written by Geert De Kockere and has not yet been translated into German. 26 people live in the street without end . Your houses do not have a house number, but a letter. This letter is the first letter of the name of the person who lives in the house. The A stands for Anneliesje, B for Belle etc. On each page of the book the reader gets to know a new character. The picture book / song book Koetje in de klaver was published on October 1, 1997 by the Belgian publisher De Eenhoorn in Dutch and comprises 32 pages. Geert De Kockere wrote the book. The book has not yet been published in German translation. Koetje in de klaver contains 20 rhymed children's songs as well as recommendations on how the songs can best be sung. There are colorful illustrations for each song. Annemie Van Riel composed the music for the rhymes. On the back of the book there are the musical notes for piano and guitar.

I have an idea

Cneut's sixth picture book Ik hen een idee was published on October 1, 1999 by De Eenhoorn in Dutch and comprises 48 pages. The author of the book is Geert De Kockere. So far there is no German translation. The book describes in poetic and philosophical terms, combined with dreamy illustrations, an imagination of the future.

Willy

The picture book Willy was published on March 1, 1999 by the Belgian publisher De Eenhoorn in Dutch and comprises 36 pages. Geert De Kockere wrote the book. It has not yet appeared in German translation, but has been published in English , French and Hindi , among others . The book tells the story of the elephant Willy. Willy has four huge legs and a body big enough for two. His ears are big enough that if he wags them he can cause a storm, and he loves to paint pictures with the hair on his tail. Sometimes Willy gets annoyed because of his fat legs, big ears, and wide bum. But none of that matters when it turns out that people love Willy just for who he is.

Willy was awarded the Boekenpauw (2000). Willy received an overall very positive response from the press. The Kirkus Review wrote, "Readers will be inspired to think of Willy" (Kirkus Review, July 5, 2011) and the Publishers Weekly added, "What might otherwise be a“ handsome-is-as-handsome-does ”moral is launched into new territory by the calm, arm's-length tone of the narrator and Cneut's simultaneously ridiculous and dignified paintings. «Publishers Weekly, June 27, 2011.

The book tells the story of the fairy Rosemary, who, if her mother has her way, should always be nice and tidy. But Rosemary would rather be a witch, because they can be rude and dirty sometimes. When Rosemary befriends witches and starts acting like one, her mother no longer wants to see her at home. Rosemary is the heroine of the story, who sees her environment fearlessly and critically and in the end can also convince her mother and the other witches that fairies are not always nice and witches are not always bad. Heksenfee was awarded the White Raven Award (2000). The book received positive press coverage. The newspaper Die Zeit recommends Heksenfee and writes: "The fact that Hexenfee can definitely be seen is due to the pictures by the internationally known Belgian illustrator Carll Cneut." Woeste Mie

Cneut's ninth picture book Woeste Mie was published on March 1, 2000 by De Eenhoorn in Dutch and comprises 32 pages. The book was written by Geert De Kockere. The book has not yet been published in German translation. “Woeste Mie” has been published in France , among other places .

The book tells the story of Wild Winnie (Woeste Mie) who wants a party so badly that she sits down on the table and starts screaming. Her husband is so frightened that he hides under the table and cannot come out. He tries to dissuade Winnie from her plans, but she continues to dream of the greatest parties: parties with loads of cakes, parties with drums and trumpets, or best of all: a dance party. "Woeste Mie" was awarded the Bologna Ragazzi Award Special Mention at the 2001 Book Fair.

Cneut's picture book / novel for young people “Stilstaan” was published in Dutch in 2004 by the Belgian publisher Davidsfonds / Infodok and has 92 pages. The book was written by Willy Schuyesmans. The German translation was published on November 18, 2005 by Pro Business Verlag and comprises 139 pages.

The book tells the story of Benjamin, who died of heart failure in hospital. Now he stands next to his body, invisible to his family, and watches as the doctor tries to resuscitate him, as his family goes to his funeral and visits his grave in the cemetery. At the same time, Benjamin gets to know the other deceased, makes friends and has a good time in the new world. Salam grows up in a small Arab village. Salam dreams of traveling the world when he grows up. But the people from his village laugh at him and say that he will never grow up. Offended by the comments, Salam leaves the village with an empty pocket. Then the wind seizes him and carries him away. Salam is scared, but the wind doesn't want to let him down and so Salam travels the world and puts the things in his pocket that he can get hold of. When his bag is almost full, the wind finally lets him back to earth in the desert. Salam doesn't know what to do or where to go at first, but all the things he has collected along the way are now proving to be very helpful.

Dulle Griet

Cneut's picture book Dulle Griet was published on March 4, 2005 by De Eenhoorn in Dutch and has 32 pages. The book was written by Geert De Kockere and does not yet exist in German. The story from Dulle Griet is based on the painting Mad Meg by Pieter Bruegel the Elder from 1562. Dulle Griet is initially called Gretchen and is a lovely child, but as she grows older and becomes Griet , she takes on a malicious character. She yells at her parents, pulls flowers and pushes people from a tower to see what is left of them. One day the people from the village tell her to go to hell and Griet takes her at her word. Because nobody in the village wants to ask for her hand, Griet runs to hell and calls out to the devil to ask for his hand. When he does not appear, Griet takes her sword and pushes it through her heart.

"Dulle Griet" was awarded the Golden Plaque Bratislava (2005).

O monster, eet mij niet op (2006) / Monster, don't eat me! (2006)

Cneut's picture book O monster, eet mij niet op was published on August 1, 2006 by De Eenhoorn in Dutch and has 26 pages. The book was written by Carl Norac. The German translation was published on August 15, 2006 by Residenz Verlag and comprises 32 pages. Pauline Katz translated the book into German. O monster, eet mij niet op has been published in the USA , France , Italy , China , Korea , India , Spain , Portugal , Slovenia , Estonia , Norway , Latvia and Hungary , among others .

The book tells about Alex the pig who loves to eat - even between meals. When his mother catches him doing it again, she sends him to the river to do the dishes. On the way back, Alex passes a raspberry bush and cannot resist. Just as he is bending over the raspberries, however, a huge shadow appears over him. It's a huge monster that Alex wants to eat. Alex just manages to escape when the monster's mother shows up to warn it not to eat between meals.

The book tells the story of Rufus the elephant, who suddenly sees butterflies everywhere. His parents look at him knowingly and send him on his way to follow the butterflies without telling him what they mean. On the way he asks everyone he meets whether they can see the butterflies, but whenever they look the butterflies have disappeared. Only the old elk seems to know the butterflies and advises Rufus to enjoy them. Rufus wanders on, confused, until he sees a girl sitting on a bridge with a million butterflies dancing around her head. Eén miljoen vlinders has received the Zilveren Griffel Award (2008) and the Plantin-Moretus Prize (2008) for book design.

The picture book Te veel verdriet voor één hart: vier tragedies van Shakespeare was published on May 5, 2008 by the Belgian publisher Davidfonds Literair in Dutch and has 334 pages. The book was written by Ed Franck. The book has not yet been published in German translation. The first part of the book is written from the boy's point of view. He lives in a village in the African forest and has to face a task there in order to become a man. But then the village is destroyed by a herd of elephants and the boy's parents and sister die. The second part of the story is told by the dead sister. When she dies, her mind passes into one of the elephants that attacked the village. In the form of the elephant, she accompanies her brother, who is expelled from the village because he has left the hut without permission. The boy travels to a copper mine with the elephant and his totem bird, but the people there chase him away. Shortly afterwards, the boy meets a gang of young people who live as a family on the edge of the copper mine and who take him in as a new member of the family. They call him "Great Warrior". One day there is a fight between the youth gang and another family. The tiger unexpectedly appears during the fight and kills a friend of the boy. The boy develops a plan and finally manages to kill the tiger and with it his totem animal. He becomes a man and his sister can pass into the realm of the dead.
