Edward van de Vendel (born August 1, 1964 in Leerdam ) is a Dutch author of picture , children's and youth books .

life and work

Edward van de Vendel and a colleague founded a primary school in Heemstede , which he ran for four years. In 1996 his first book, Betrap me, was published . In 2001 he gave up teaching and devoted himself entirely to writing. His literary work includes children's books, children's poetry, books for young people and non-fiction. His book Twice or cooler than ice cream was the official gift book of the Dutch Children's Book Week in 2005 and had a print run of 390,000 copies. In the Netherlands his books have been published almost exclusively by his parent publishers Querido and De Eenhoorn . To date, Edward van de Vendel has written more than 50 books for children and young people. The majority of them are picture books and children's books .

Edward van de Vendel's books have been translated into thirteen languages ​​(German, English, Bokmal, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Norwegian, Danish, Chinese, Georgian, Catalan, Slovenian). In 2015 he was a member of the jury for The Extraordinary Book of the Children and Youth Program of the Berlin International Literature Festival .

Edward van de Vendel was nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize in 2005 for his book Was ich haben haben, and also in 2011 and 2012 for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Prize . In the Netherlands he has been awarded the Zilveren Griffel seven times (2001, 2004, 2008–2012), three times the Gouden Zoen (1999, 2000, 2007) and once the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs (2004) for his work . Edward van de Vendel lives in Rotterdam.
