A songbook is a book that contains a collection of songs , often with information about their musical composition.

content

In terms of content, songbooks cover a wide spectrum, including collections of art and folk songs , songs by one or more artists or from a specific subject area. Songbooks can only contain the text ( lyric ) of the songs , information on the accompaniment (for example, chordsheets in the form of chords ) or the complete musical notation with and without text.

Songbooks that are used for singing together in a fixed group are called hymn books , especially in the church sector .

history

The genesis of the “songbook” genre is closely linked to the recording of vernacular songs in the late Middle Ages and the spread of book printing since the middle of the 15th century.

Song manuscripts , i.e. handwritten collections of songs as a forerunner of the printed songbooks, have been passed down since the late 13th century. This group also includes the oldest works known as song books, such as the Augsburg song book from 1454, which was published without a melody recording , the Lochamer song book (around 1460), the Glogauer song book or the Rostock song book (both around 1480).

In addition to the text printing with movable letters , the development of was music printing with movable type by Erhard Oeglin (Ocellus) in 1507 an important stage in the development of the genre of books. The oldest known printed songbook also comes from Oeglin, the songbook published in Augsburg in 1512 , with 4 parts with works by Heinrich Isaac , Ludwig Senfl , Paul Hofhaimer and others. At about the same time, song books were also published by Arnt von Aich in Cologne and Peter Schöffer in Mainz.
