Johannes Helm (psychologist)

Johannes Helm (born March 10, 1927 in Schlawa ) is a German psychologist, painter and writer. He was Professor of Clinical Psychology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and a student of Kurt Gottschaldt .

Act

Helm's research focus was initially on personality psychology in the shape-theoretical orientation of his teacher Gottschaldt. In the scientific literature reference is made to his work on the role of affects in thinking and acting in particular. Later, Helm played a key role in establishing an internationally oriented clinical psychology in the GDR. Together with Inge Frohburg, Helm has further developed the concepts of conversation psychotherapy , made it therapeutically ready for application in the GDR and developed corresponding training and further education programs. The training began with the clinical psychology studies. This was the predominant therapy method in the GDR, it was financed through social insurance, and the offer was both inpatient and outpatient.

From the end of the 1960s, there were close contacts to Reinhard and Anne-Marie Tausch , who introduced conversation psychotherapy in the FRG. To support the East German researchers, tape recordings of psychotherapy sessions were smuggled into the GDR. At an international congress of psychologists, a film about group psychotherapy had to be shown twice, the second time in Leipzig 's largest cinema in Leipzig at 6 a.m. Formed in the GDR conversation therapist hoped because of the great conformity of training and practice after the turn, although an "Unconditional" recognition of their training, they agreed with the AMLA to special regulations and Nachqualifizierungsseminare. 207 therapists and 18 trainers took advantage of this.

Helm is married to the writer Helga Schubert .

In addition to psychology, Helm first pursued painting as a hobby, but later developed it into his main activity. The phases of this development are described in his book “Mal reasons”. In the 80s he ended his work as a professor prematurely and since then has only devoted himself to painting. He describes his style as "naive painting" and influenced by Albert Ebert . Together with his wife Helga, he lives in the artists' colony Drispeth (Alt-Meteln), where he already oriented himself in the 1970s (then together with Christa and Gerhard Wolf , Joachim Seyppel , Werner Lindemann , Daniela Dahn , Joochen Laabs , Klaus B. Schröder , Wolf Spillner , Detlef Kempgens and the initiator Thomas Nicolaou ). There they formed a community that is well described in Christa Wolf's book “ Sommerstück ”.

In his book Tanz auf der Ruine he tries to caricature the science and culture of the GDR - partly with hints and possibly only understandable for the people who have lived in his environment.
