Albert Ebert (painter)
Albert Ebert (born April 26, 1906 in Halle (Saale) ; † August 21, 1976 there ) was a naive German painter and graphic artist .
Life
After attending primary school in Halle (Saale), he began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in 1921, which he did not complete. Until 1939 he made his way as a furniture carrier, market helper, construction worker, temporary worker and in other activities. In the Second World War , in which he participated as a soldier from the beginning of 1939, he was wounded. During the stay in the hospital he began to paint.
In 1946 he studied painting for two semesters at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle (Saale) with Professor Charles Crodel and received drawing lessons from Waldemar Grzimek .
From 1947 he worked as a casual worker again and, in parallel, sat in 1948 in what was then the State Gallery of Saxony-Anhalt in the Moritzburg (Halle) as a restorer. In 1948 he exhibited for the first time in the exhibition “Das Werk” by the artist group “Die Fähre”. He married for the second time in 1951 and moved into an apartment in the idyllic Talstrasse in the Kröllwitz district of Halle . From 1954 to 1956 he worked as a stoker at the Burg Giebichenstein art college and again as a construction worker in Halle. With the support of friends and a grant from the CDU (GDR) he was able to work as a freelance painter from 1956. In 1973 he was honored with the art prize of the city of Halle.
His grave is in the Kröllwitz cemetery in Halle.

Coming from Crodel's imagery, he developed into " Henri Rousseau von der Saale ". His small-format poetic pictures, which depict the everyday life of the “little” people, are completed in connection with Crodel's technique of painting on hardboard under the influence of the painter Kurt Bunge in a glazing technique on wood , which was introduced around 1930 .
From 1964 he dealt with the technique of etching . The painter and graphic artist Benno Schulz supported him in processing the printing plates and making the prints. But also in the field of painting there was a lively exchange of ideas between these artist friends for many years until Ebert's death.
From the age of 60 he was intensively involved with lithography . In collaboration with his friend, graphic artist Helmut Brade , he created a new field of experimentation for himself. The etchings and lithographs were mostly printed in small editions; sometimes Ebert worked on them again later, so that delightful unique items were created.
In a time that is organized, registered and leveled, someone paints what concerns him, what pleases him: Albert Ebert. Existence has firmly gripped him, he knows how it sucks your back when he has to lug bricks in his masonry job. But he was able to retain a genuine simplicity, the original painterly means of which astonish us [...]. Ebert only started painting when he was 40; Today one of his works hangs in the National Gallery. (Charles Crodel, in: Panorama 3, 1959, No. 5, p. 5)
Overviews of works were shown in 1976 by the Staatliche Galerie Moritzburg Halle and in 1991 by the Museum Junge Kunst in Frankfurt (Oder) . For Ebert's 100th birthday in 2006, the State Gallery Moritzburg Halle organized a large exhibition on his work. Since the opening of the new Moritzburg State Gallery in 2008, there has been a separate room dedicated only to the work of this naive artist.
