Helmut Brade (born November 16, 1937 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German set designer , poster designer and graphic designer .

life and career

Helmut Brade attended the Pforta State School near Naumburg. From 1955 to 1960 he studied ceramics , architecture and graphic design at the University of Industrial Design in Halle, Burg Giebichenstein in Halle. In 1972 he started working as a set designer for international theaters and opera houses. He often worked with Peter Konwitschny .

His work at the local university began in 1993 with a teaching position. Just one year later he took over the professorship for communication design, which he held until his retirement in 2003. From 1999 to 2004 he was President of the Free Academy of the Arts in Leipzig . He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and lives in Halle.

In 2015 Helmut Brade published his 700th poster. For almost 50 years he has designed posters for theaters, operas, museums and cinemas. On the occasion of the centenary of Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle in 2015, the anniversary exhibition “The 100 best posters in the castle” was created - 17 works by Helmut Brade were selected from the university archive, which comprises 2,000 posters.

Awards

Brade received the art prize of the city of Halle, was awarded the national prize of the GDR for his artistic work in 1988, was honored with the Handel prize of the Halle district in 1990 and received the art prize of the state of Saxony-Anhalt in 2003 .
