Kenneth Oppel

Kenneth Oppel (born August 31, 1967 in Port Alberni , British Columbia ) is a Canadian fantasy and science fiction writer. Since 1985 he has written 30 picture books / children's books / youth novels and one adult novel , fourteen of which are also available in German translation.

His most important books include The Nest (2015, German Das Nest , 2016), Silverwing (1997, German Silberflügel , 2000) and Airborn (2004, German Wolkenpanther , 2005)

Life

Kenneth Oppel was born on August 31, 1967 in Port Alberni (British Columbia). He grew up in Victoria and Halifax , but also spent parts of his youth in Labrador , England and Ireland . As a boy, he loved video games, role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, and movies like Star Wars . While in high school, he wrote his first children's book, Colin's Fantastic Video Adventure , at age 14 . A friend sent the manuscript to Roald Dahl's agent who helped publish the book (1985). Oppel studied at the University of Toronto , where he majored in English literature and film studies, and graduated in 1989. He met his wife in Toronto and traveled with her to England, where she completed her Ph.D. worked. After three years they moved back to Canada. During his time in England, Oppel continued to write and publish new books and build a fan base. In Canada, Oppel worked for some time as an editor for Quill & Quire magazine. Today Oppel lives in Toronto, Ontario with his wife Philippa Sheppard and their three children. His best-known works are the bat books, which in three volumes tell the adventures of young bats in language appropriate for children and have some fantasy elements. The fourth book in the series, Darkwing , is 65 million years in the past and tells how the first bat discovered that it had the gift of flight.

In 2016 he was a member of the jury for The Extraordinary Book of the Children and Youth Program of the Berlin International Literature Festival .

Colin's Fantastic Video Adventure (1985)

Oppel's first children's book Colin's Fantastic Video Adventure was published on May 30, 1985 by the English publisher Puffin Books in English and comprises 112 pages. Dead Water Zone (1992)

Oppel's youth novel Dead Water Zone was published in 1992 by the American publisher Little, Brown and Company in English and comprises 125 pages. The book has not yet been published in German translation. Dead Water Zone has been published in England, Denmark, France and Italy, among others.

The book tells the story of Paul who travels to Watertown to find his brother Sam. The water in Watertown is contaminated with a mutated microorganism that makes people unusually strong. Sam carried out self-experiments with the organism, but then suddenly it disappeared. Dead Water Zone can be assigned to various literary genres. Sunwing (1999) / solar wings (2001)

Sunwing was published on August 12, 1999 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and comprises 243 pages. Shadows managed to save his colony from great danger and has now become their leader. After finding out that his father is still alive, Shade makes it his business to find him. Firewing (2002) / Feuerflügel (2003)

Firewing was published on April 18, 2002 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and comprises 328 pages. The German translation was published by Beltz & Gelberg Verlag on October 28, 2003 and comprises 430 pages. Klaus Weimann did the translation. Firewing has been published in France, Spain, Taiwan and Iceland, among others.

A deep crevice opens up during a severe earthquake. Shade's son Griffin is pulled deep into the earth through the crack, and Shade embarks on a dangerous journey to find his son. Little did he know that one of his enemies was looking for Griffin at the same time. A race against time begins when Shade tries to save his son.

Firewing has received the Manitoba Young Readers' Choice Award (2004), among others. Firewing received a mixed media response . The Kirkus Review wrote “Oppel's writing is beautiful in its evocation of the bat world”, but also criticized Oppel's writing style “However, there is a problem with voice in the story. Darkwing (2007) / Night Wing (2008)

Darkwing was published on August 16, 2007 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and comprises 432 pages. The book was illustrated by Keith Thompson. The book tells the story of Twilight, a bat that lived on earth 65 million years ago. While the other bats can only glide through the air at this point, Twilight is one of the first bats to be able to actively fly. But suddenly the colony is threatened by a horde of cat-like animals and Twilight can come to the aid of the others with his unique abilities.

Peg and the Whale (2000)

Oppel 's children's book Peg and the Whale was published on September 1, 2000 by the US publisher Simon & Schuster in English and comprises 40 pages. The book was illustrated by Terry Widener. The book has not yet been published in German translation.

The book tells the story of Peg. Peg is good at everything she does, but she wants to be so much better. She hires on the whaling ship “Viper”, but when she tries to catch a whale, she is swallowed by him. In the belly of the whale, Peg goes on a long journey that takes her to Antarctica.

The Devil's Cure (2000) / The Work of the Devil (2003)

Oppel's first adult novel The Devil's Cure was published in English on April 19, 2000 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins and has 416 pages. The German translation was published on July 1, 2003 by Bastei Lübbe Verlag and comprises 526 pages. Lore Straßl did the translation. Dr. Laura Donaldson works in cancer research. During a series of tests, she found that a patient's blood contains an immune substance that can destroy cancer cells. But the patient, David Haines, is on death row in the maximum security prison. He still manages to break out when he hears about the results of his examination. For religious reasons, Haines is against the research and sets out to kill his remaining family members before the doctors find them. The Devil's Cure can be assigned to the crime genre.

The Devil's Cure received mixed press coverage. Publishers Weekly commented on "Oppel […] shows versatility and imaginative brio as he delves into adult fiction for the first time" (Publishers Weekly, June 4, 2001). The Quill & Quire , however, criticized "What's absent is did unique perspective, weird twist plot, or love especially memorable character did makes a book unforgettable" (John North).

Peg and the Yeti (2004)

Oppel's children's book Pet and the Yeti was published on September 13, 2004 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and has 32 pages. The book was illustrated by Barbara Reid. The book has not yet been published in German translation.

The book tells the story of Peg who sets out to experience a new adventure. After Peg has sailed long enough on the sea, she now wants to climb Mount Everest . Airborn Series

Airborn (2004) / Wolkenpanther (2005)

The result is a vividly imagined, lushly evoked simulacrum of the past. "(Maureen Garvie). The Guardian comments, "The dialogue is incredibly gripping and the descriptions of this alternate world are amazingly evocative." And adds, "I highly recommend this trilogy to people who enjoy reading fantasy and adventure." (The Guardian, November 7, 2015).

On August 9, 2007, Full Cast Audio published an audio book version of the English version of the book, which was read by David Kelly . On February 15, 2006 Beltz & Gelberg published an audio book edition of the German version of the book, which was read in by Marian Funk .

Skybreaker (2005) / Cloud Pirates (2006)

Oppel's youth novel Skybreaker was published on July 20, 2005 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and comprises 340 pages. The book was illustrated by Kirk Caldwell. The German translation was published by Beltz & Gelberg on August 18, 2006 and comprises 552 pages. Anna Blankenburg did the translation. Skybreaker has been published in France, Japan and Australia, among others.

Matt Cruse is studying at the Aviation Academy. As an intern he flies through a typhoon on the airship “Treibgut” over the Indian Ocean. The team discovered the Zeppelin "Hyperion", which had been missing for years. Matt is the only one who remembers the coordinates of the Zeppelin and tries to recover the Hyperion together with his girlfriend Kate and the pilot Hal Slater. Starclimber (2008) / Star Hunter (2010)

Starclimber was published on August 26, 2008 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and comprises 356 pages. Matt Cruse has the chance of his life: he is allowed to travel into space as one of the first astral nauts on board the “Starclimber”. As it turns out, the Starclimber is not a real spaceship, but a kind of elevator car that is pulled into space on a rope. Kate is also on board the Starclimber and Matt has to find out that Kate is engaged. In space, the crew encounters living beings and gets into a life-threatening situation when the beings prevent their return to earth.

The King's Taster (2007)

Oppel's picture book / children's book The King's Taster was published in English on June 1, 2007 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins and has 32 pages. The book was illustrated by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher. The book has not yet been published in German translation. The King's Taster has been published in America, among others.

The book tells the story of the dog Max, who lives with a cook and is the king's taster. So it comes that Max is allowed to eat all the delicacies. But the new king doesn't like the food and so it happens that Max and the cook run the risk of not only losing their jobs.

Half Brother (2010) / Monkey Brother (2015)

Oppel's youth novel Half Brother was published on January 1, 2010 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and comprises 375 pages. The German translation was published by Beltz & Gelberg on July 13, 2015 and comprises 439 pages. Gerold Anrich and Martina Instinsky-Anrich did the translation. The book tells the story of Ben and the chimpanzee Zan. Ben's parents are engaged in research and adopt the chimpanzee baby Zan for an experiment, to whom they want to teach sign language. A brotherly relationship soon developed between Ben and Zan. But when the financial means for the experiment are cut and Zan does not show the desired development, he is to be sold on to a scientific institution.

The book tells the story of the twin brothers Victor and Konrad Frankenstein. They are inseparable until Konrad suddenly becomes terminally ill. Victor is ready to do anything to save his brother. At Chateau Frankenstein he came across a secret library in which a book promised the "elixir of life". Together with Elizabeth, Victor sets out to find the ingredients and is put to the test more than once. In his prequel to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein , Kenneth Oppel examines the character of Victor Frankenstein and tries to provide answers on how Frankenstein became the character we know.

This Dark Endeavor won the Libris Award (2012) and was on the London Times Best Children's Books list in 2011 . This Dark Endeavor received an overall positive response from the press. Publishers Weekly described it as "a delicious mix of science, history, and horror" (Publishers Weekly, June 6, 2011). The Globe and Mail writes "This Dark Endeavor may renew interest in Frankenstein, but it also stands alone as an original and welcome addition to the world of young-adult fiction." Such Wicked Intent (2012) / A Dark Will (2013)

Oppel's youth novel Such Wicked Intent was published on January 1, 2012 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and comprises 310 pages. The German translation was published by Beltz & Gelberg on January 28, 2013 and comprises 384 pages. Gerold Anrich and Martina Instinsky-Anrich did the translation. Such Wicked Intent has been published in China, Australia and Turkey, among others.

Victor Frankenstein is devastated that he could not prevent the death of his twin brother Konrad. In his frustration, he vows never to deal with alchemy again and burns all the books in the dark library. But an iron book resists fire. It promises access to the realm of the dead and in Victor the hope of being able to save his brother grows. Together with Elizabeth he dares to step into the realm of the dead.

The Boundless (2014) / Danger Express (2017)

The Boundless was published on April 1, 2014 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and comprises 332 pages. The book was illustrated by Jim Tierney. The book was published in German in 2017 by Aladin Verlag. The Boundless has been published in Australia, New Zealand and Russia, among others.

The book tells the story of Will Everett, who travels with his father on the Boundless, the longest train ever built. At a stop, Will witnesses a murder. He loses his father and just manages to get back on the train. He suddenly finds himself outside of safe first class on the train. To survive, he teams up with Maren and the circus artist Mr. Dorian.

The Boundless can be assigned to various literary genres. In addition to being classified as a youth novel, it has the characteristics of a crime novel.

The Boundless has received the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Award (2015) and the EB White Read Aloud Honor Award (2015), among others. The Boundless received an overall positive response from the press. Quill and Quire magazine wrote "Oppel skilfully balances lesson and legend" (Shannon Ozirny). Publishers Weekly praised "Oppel's imagination and sense of adventure never disappoint, and readers should thrill to this rousing tale as it barrels ahead at full speed" (Publishers Weekly, February 10, 2014), and the Guardian added, "Mingling history and fantasy, The Boundless is a memorable creation, and confidently runs along the rails behind the Hogwarts Express, the 4.50 from Paddington, and other great literary locomotives. The Nest (2015) / The Nest (2016)

The Nest was published on October 6, 2015 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins in English and comprises 256 pages. The book was illustrated by Jon Klassen . The German translation was published by Dressler Verlag on January 25, 2016 and comprises 217 pages. Jessika Komina and Sandra Knuffinke did the translation. The Nest has been published in Italy, Sweden and Brazil, among others.

The book tells the story of Steve who has a seriously ill baby brother. In his dreams, beings appear to Steve who remind him of angels and who promise him that they can heal the baby. Over time, however, it turns out that the creatures are wasps who breed a new baby in their nest that they want to exchange for Steve's brother. When Steve stands in the way of the wasps to protect his brother, he gets into a life-threatening situation.

The nest can be assigned to different literary genres. In addition to being classified as a children's book, it has characteristics of a crime thriller and of the fantasy genre.

The nest was awarded the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children Award (2016) and named Editor's Choice 2015 by the New York Times. In the features section, Publishers Weekly wrote "In exploring the boundaries of science, self-determination, and belief, Oppel uses a dark and disturbing lens to produce an unnerving psychological thriller." (Publishers Weekly of July 20, 2015), which the Kirkus Review described the book as “Compelling and accessible.” (Kirkus Review of October 6, 2015) and the New York Times commented “The Nest leaves a lasting mark on the memory .... Readers will find much to savor here, both scary and subtle . ”( Aimee Bender , New York Times October 9, 2015). The Guardian added, "The Nest dares to walk a line beyond realism without becoming fantasy, and does so with confidence. ( Marcus Sedgwick , The Guardian, April 30, 2016)

On October 6, 2015, Simon & Schuster published an audio book version of the English version of the book, which was read by Gibson Frazier.

Every Hidden Thing (2016) / From Searching and Finding (2017)

Oppel's children's book / youth novel Every Hidden Thing was published in English on September 20, 2016 by the Canadian publisher HarperCollins. The book was published in 2017 in a German translation by Dressler Verlag. Every Hidden Thing also appeared in Australia and New Zealand.

The book tells the story of Samuel and his father, who set out on the hunt for the "Black Beauty", a huge dinosaur skeleton with bones black as ebony. But they're not the only ones looking for the skeleton. Rachel Cartland hopes to be able to start a new life by finding the skeleton and to impress her father. When their paths cross, the competition between the fathers grows more and more, but Samuel and Rachel enjoy each other.
