Maria Parr (born January 18, 1981 in Fiskå near Vanylven ) is a Norwegian writer. With Vaffelhjarte (2005, German: Waffelherzen an der Angel , 2008) and Tonje Glimmerdal (2009, German: Freckles on her knees , 2010), two books by her have so far appeared, both of which are also available in German translation. Maria Parr is considered one of the most important contemporary Norwegian writers in the field of children's and youth literature . She has won numerous national and international awards for her two books, including the Bragepreis (2009), the Prix Sorcières (2010) and the Lynx of the Year (2010).

life and work

Parr graduated with a Masters degree in Nordic literature from the University of Bergen and is currently continuing her studies at the University of Volda .

Her first book Vaffelhjarte was published in Norway in 2005 and tells of Lena and Trille, who live in the country and spice up their everyday lives with crazy pranks. For Vaffelhjarte Parr received the Nynorsk Prize and the Dutch Children's Book Prize Zilveren Griffel . The book has been translated into several languages, including German. It was also filmed in 2011 by the Norwegian television network NRK . The location was the island of Runde in western Norway . Divided into 7 episodes, this film adaptation has meanwhile been broadcast several times on KIKA under the title Waffelherzen .

Parr's second book Tonje Glimmerdal , published in 2009, was also a success, sold in 15 countries and awarded the Brage Prize , among other things . The German translation ("Freckles on my knees") was published in 2010 and was awarded the Lynx of the Year . In Tonje Glimmerdal , Parr talks about Tonje, the only child in a small village who has to make do with the ancient Gunnvald as a friend, but who is always up for fun. When Gunnvald has to go to the hospital and a strange unfriendly woman suddenly appears and moves into his house, Tonje has to use all her imagination to solve the riddle. Tonje Glimmerdal premiered as a play at the Norwegian Theater in Oslo on October 26, 2013 .

Parr's books have been translated into at least 12 languages (Danish, German, English, French, Indian, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Swedish, Czech, Turkish). Parr's children's books are particularly popular in Russia. Vaffelhjarte sold more than 20,000 times there and Tonje Glimmerdal more than 12,000 times.

Parr is currently the most important Norwegian children's author. Because of the range of subjects and literary style of her books, she is often compared to Astrid Lindgren and Johanna Spyri . Although she has only published two books, she has won an impressive number of awards and accolades. Literary criticism also celebrates it euphorically.

Parr regularly visits Germany for readings. In July 2010 she was a guest at the 1st Ravens Festival in Munich and at the Nordlandfest in Kiel and in 2011 in May at the Norway Festival in Hamburg. In September 2012 she presented her books as part of the children's and youth program at the 12th international literature festival berlin . There she was also a member of the jury for The Extraordinary Book ' award .

Press review

During the time, Susanne Gaschke wrote about Parr's literary style: "It must be a kind of curse for young Scandinavian authors that the question is always in the air: Could this be the new Astrid Lindgren ? And the attribution probably seems like a self ruinous prophecy: Whoever is described in this way will never be. We certainly do not want to achieve that for Maria Parr, from whom much can still be expected. Therefore, let me just say this much here: Her language is no less clear, precise and haunting than Lindgrens. Her memory of what it means to be a child is no less painfully true and touching. Her voice is very much her own: young, new and bright - but also a little dark. Fortunately. " For the Süddeutsche Zeitung of September 5, 2008, " Waffelherzen an der Angel " is not only unusual in its title. This mixture of tension, comedy, and sadness, which is told with great emotion and groovy dialogues, shows a credible heroine who is her own May experience, not to learn something, as is so often the case with reading for children, but to find out what life can mean. " For Angelika Overath from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , "the multi-award-winning children's novel Freckles on your Knees (...) is a dramatically brilliant piece of children's literature, exciting, surprising, fairy-tale. With tenderness and humor, trust and friendship, love and disappointment are told between parents and children. " The special quality of Parr's freckles on his knees is also pointed out in the Bulletin Jugend & Literatur (issue 4/2010) : "The charm of this impressive children's novel, which received the Luchs von der Zeit and Radio Bremen among other awards , lies in the successful mix speed, comic situations and a sense of quiet interpersonal tones as well as generally valid values - that has something, as Maria Parr says at times, a little "old-fashioned" in tone and attitude, and then again very lively to bring a detail to the point in a highly contemporary way . The subtle, comic-like drawings by Heike Herold exactly match the freshness and liveliness of the novel. " The jury for the 2010 Annual Lynx Prize , which Parr won, was enthusiastic about the book's "captivating linguistic and narrative quality".
