Maitha Al Khayat

Maitha Al Khayat (* 1979 in Ras Al Khaimah , United Arab Emirates ) is an Arabic illustrator and author of children's books. She has written several children's books, five of which are also available in English translation, and also illustrated several books.

Her most important books include I Love My Dad's Long Beard (2009), and My own special way . The latter was nominated for the Marsh Award (2013) and was described by the Guardian as "entertaining and freshly told".

Al Khayat lives in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.

Life

Maitha Al Khayat, who was born in the United Arab Emirates, spent most of her childhood in the United States and the United Kingdom. She started reading books in middle school in the UK. After studying business administration, she worked in a school library until she decided to get married and start a family. Today she is the mother of four children, still enjoys reading and not only writes for the Ajyaal Entertainment company, but is also active as a freelance children's book author and illustrator.

In 2016 she was a member of the jury for The Extraordinary Book of the Children and Youth Program of the Berlin International Literature Festival .

Literary work

The author has written several children's books, five of which have been translated into English. In addition, she illustrated various children's books, of which the children's book PengOuins - The Bedouin Penguins was also translated into English. The book tells the story of Hamda, who is just old enough to wear her headscarf - like her older sisters. But she has to find her own, very personal way to wear the scarf and make it part of her life.

When a Camel Craves Crunchies (2012)

The children's book When a Camel craves Crunchies , written in rhymes, was published in Arabic and English by Kalimat in 2012 and has 36 pages. The book was illustrated by Mariana Ruiz Johnson. The book has not yet been published in German translation.

In this book, a little Bedouin girl and a camel take a trip around the culinary world of the United Arab Emirates.

Mom's amazing socks (2013)

Khayat 's children 's book Mom’s amazing Socks was published in 2013 by Kalimat in English and Arabic and comprises 16 pages. The book was illustrated by Maya Fidawi. The book has not yet been published in German translation.

The book tells the story of a girl who recognizes her mother again and again even though she wears a burqa - thanks to her brightly colored socks.

Turn off the Lights (2014)

Khayat 's children 's book Turn off the Lights was published by Kalimat in 2014 in English and Arabic and comprises 24 pages. The book was illustrated by Gustavo Aimar. The book has not yet been published in German translation.

In turn the lights off is told how the little boy Omar, who lives on a farm, wanders in the night and want to play with the animals of the farm children. The parents of the animals explain to him that the little ones are already sleeping - and when they are finally awake and want to play with Omar, Omar is much too tired and goes straight to bed.
