John Burningham

John Burningham (born April 27, 1936 in Farnham , England - † January 4, 2019 ) was a British children's author and illustrator .

Life

Burningham went to Summerhill School . Before attending the Central School of Art and Design in London at the age of 20 , he worked as a film illustrator in southern Italy and Israel. He graduated in 1959. His career began in 1963 with the picture book Borka , for which he received the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1963 , the highest award for a British picture book; In 1970 he received the Kate Greenaway Medal again for Mr Gumpy's Outing . Burningham has authored more than sixty books and has received many awards. Borka was his first picture book. Later he was one of the most famous illustrators in the world.

John Burningham married Helen Gillian Oxenbury in 1964. He lived in London with his wife and children until his death in January 2019 .
