Image cycles
Wherever is a 14-part picture cycle that was first exhibited in Frankfurt am Main in 2009. These are paintings that revolve around the subject of animals in many different ways.
Animals represent a recurring thematic focus in Meschenmoser's oeuvre, for example in series such as Selenit and Selenit II , for which the artist studied in detail the behavior and movement of various living beings. Influenced by visits to the zoo, Sebastian Meschenmoser's series Wherever shows the observer the ambivalence of wild animals in an artificial and man-made environment. In this way, the contemporary works also enable classic art-historical references to works by painters such as Hieronymus Bosch or the inventor of the diorama, Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre .
In 2007 the work cycle of Selenit was created. whose title is based on the characters of the moon inhabitants from Jules Verne's novels De la Terre a la Lune (1865) and Autour de la Lune (1867). In line with this, Meschenmoser's painting shows astronauts, great apes and robots in blurred, bright colors, which position themselves in front of dark backgrounds.
20,000 Miles is the 2006 series of works inspired by Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea . You can see children, sea creatures and people underwater in surreal compositions. The figures are shown very realistically, whereas the background is painted abstract and seems to be almost disappearing.
