Hartmut El Kurdi (*  1964 in Amman , Jordan ) is a German writer .

Life

Hartmut El Kurdi's mother is German , his father is an Arab , and his grandfather is a Kurd . He grew up in London and Kassel , studied cultural studies and aesthetic practice at the University of Hildesheim and has lived in Hanover since 2009 .

He writes satirical columns for the Berlin taz and various city magazines. He writes plays, radio plays and prose. He is also active as an actor and theater director. Among other things, he staged at the Braunschweig State Theater , Dortmund Children's and Youth Theater, Rostock Volkstheater , Schauspiel Essen and Hildesheim City Theater. Since the 2015/2016 season he has worked as a dramaturge at the State Theater in Hanover .

Since 2006 El Kurdi has been guitarist with the band The Twang under the pseudonym Reverend Al Twang .

In April 2007, the action taken by the mayor of Braunschweig, Gert Hoffmann, was discussed by the CDU against El Kurdi across the country . Hoffmann felt insulted and personally attacked by El Kurdi because of his satirical texts and a reference to Hoffmann's former NPD membership and thereupon instructed employees of the Braunschweig city administration not to appear together with El Kurdi on official occasions, which de facto resulted in El Kurdi being banned from appearing came the same at city and city-funded cultural events. Hoffmann was reprimanded for his actions by the German Cultural Council . Hoffmann did not take back the controversial instruction despite considerable criticism. As a result, El Kurdi moved to Hanover.

From 2010 to 2015 Hartmut El Kurdi was a member of the jury for the children's and youth book prize “Luchs” awarded by the weekly newspaper Die Zeit in cooperation with Radio Bremen . In addition, El Kurdi writes in the time regular meetings of newly released children's books.
