Eliasz Noach Flug , also Noah Flug (born January 1, 1925 in Łódź , Poland ; † August 11, 2011 in Jerusalem ) was a Polish- Israeli economist , diplomat and Holocaust survivor. His daughter is Karnit Flug , Governor of the Central Bank of Israel .

Life

1939 Noach Flug was with his family into the Ghetto Lodz deported . In August 1944 he was deported to the concentration camps Auschwitz , Groß-Rosen and Mauthausen .

After the liberation of the Ebensee camp ( sub-camp of the Mauthausen concentration camp ) on May 6, 1945 by the US Army , Noach Flug successfully finished school in Łódź and studied economics there and in Warsaw .

In 1958 he emigrated to Israel with his newly founded family. In his professional life he worked as an economist and diplomat, among others in Zurich and Bonn.

Most recently, Noach Flug was president of the International Auschwitz Committee (IAK), curator of the Jewish Claims Conference , board member of the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO), board member of the National Center for Psychosocial Support for Holocaust Survivors and Their Families AMCHA (Hebrew for: Your People ) and the Yad Vashem Memorial . He was also chairman of the Joint Center for Holocaust Survivor Organizations in Israel.

Noach Flug caused a stir in an open letter dated September 12, 2006, in which he invited Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadineschad to Auschwitz to convince himself of the existence of the Holocaust: “In view of this claim [the Holocaust is a myth], I am closed I have clearly come to the conclusion that you lack the required knowledge on this matter, and I sincerely hope that what you have said is due more to your lack of knowledge than to malicious intent. Perhaps it is time to improve your knowledge on this matter. "

At the same time, Flug asked to be allowed to take part in the Iranian Holocaust conference that Ahmadineschad held in Tehran in December 2006: “I would be grateful if I received an invitation to take part in this conference as head of a delegation of Holocaust survivors from Israel. That would be an opportunity to have a serious and pertinent discussion on this issue. "

Honors

Noach Flug was the bearer of the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , awarded by Federal President Horst Köhler on June 15, 2006. The award was made for “decades of commitment to the interests of Holocaust survivors and his relentless work for understanding between Jews and non-Jews as well as between Israel and Germany ”.
