Norman boy
Norman Junge (* 1938 in Kiel ) is a German sculptor and internationally renowned illustrator of picture books who won the Bologna Ragazzi Award (1998) and the German Youth Literature Prize (2012), two of the world's most important prizes in the field of children's and youth literature . The best-known book to which he contributed illustrations is ottos mops (2001).
life and work
Since his apprenticeship as a typesetter and studying at the Werkkunstschule and Werkakademie in Kassel , Junge has initially worked as a commercial artist. Junge has been making sculptures from a wide variety of materials since the 1970s . In the 1980s, Junge was artistically active in public spaces. At that time he applied screen prints on walls, which, based on the novel 1984 , used pictograms to criticize the increasing mechanization and surveillance of human life.
Junge was best known for his illustrations of picture books . To date he has illustrated 20 books. He made his debut in 1985 with Lehn dich und dream - stories for bright children (text: Monika Seck-Agthe ). This was followed by Zaubertrottel (1988, text: Josef Schnelle), Nix Kuckuck (1989, text: Stephan Köster), The Ballade of Mr Yellow and Ms. Blau (1992), Jakob and his 200 grandfathers (1992, text: Miloš Macourek ), Eine cozy apartment (1994, text: Paul Maar ), the sky fell out of all the clouds (1994, text: Fredrik Vahle ), higher and higher (1996, text: Ernst Jandl ), being fifth (1997, text: Ernst Jandl), antipodes - On the other side of the world (1999, text: Ernst Jandl), Der Schlafbewacher (2000, text: Erwin Grosche ), Der Schnupfen (2000, text: Christian Morgenstern ), Norbert, der Nachtwandler (2001, text: Donna Bee), ottos mops (2001, text: Ernst Jandl), Maler Moll (2003, text: Joachim Rönneper ), Das große Lalula (2004, text: Christian Morgenstern), Secret Children's Play Book (2005, text: Joachim Ringelnatz , other illustrators : Michael Sowa , Isabel Pin , Katja Wehner, Aljoscha Blau ), Alphabet with Draftsmen - The Beauties and the Beasts by Nikolaus Heidelbach and Norman Junge ( 2008, text: Thomas Linden, further illustrator: Nikolaus Heidelbach), children's confusion book (2008, text: Joachim Ringelnatz) and Pustekönig (2011, text: Erwin Grosche).
Junge illustrated poems by Ernst Jandl in four of his books - Always Higher (1996), Fifth Being (1997), Antipodes - On the Other Side of the World (1999) and ottos mops (2001) . He illustrated poems by Joachim Ringelnatz - Secret Children's Game Book (2005) and Children's Confusion Book (2008) - and by Christian Morgenstern - Der Schnupfen (2000) and Das große Lalula (2004) twice .
Junge's in-house publishers are Beltz & Gelberg- Verlag, which has published ten of his books, and Aufbau-Verlag , which has published five of his books. Of Junge's 20 books are A cozy apartment (1994), always higher (1996), being fifth (1997), ottos mops (2001), Maler Moll (2003), Secret Children's Play Book (2005), Alphabet with Draftsmen - Die Schönen und die Biester by Nikolaus Heidelbach and Norman Junge (2008), Kinder-Verwirr-Buch (2008) and Pustekönig (2011) only nine publications available in bookshops, all others are out of print. Books illustrated by Junge have been translated into twelve languages (Basque, Chinese, Danish, English, French, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish, Slovenian, Spanish).
In addition to his work as an illustrator of picture books, Junge has made numerous films for Die Sendung mit der Maus . In 2004 he drew various episodes for the television series Das Hippopotamus Nödel .
Junge has been awarded many important prizes for his illustrative work, including the Lynx of the Year for being fifth (1997), the Bologna Ragazzi Award for being fifth (1998) and the special prize of the German Youth Literature Prize for the complete work of illustration (2012). Junge lives and works as a black artist , sculptor and draftsman in Cologne.
Press review
General importance as an illustrator and sculptor
“For his illustrations, Junge mainly chooses texts that presuppose that there is another world beyond the world of sensual experiences; In the texts by Christian Morgenstern , Joachim Ringelnatz , Ernst Jandl and Paul Maar , the imagination is given its own right. With his art, Junge not only manages to build a bridge to these texts, but also to add another level of interpretation to them with his illustrations. In doing so, Norman Junge uses his own visual language, which consistently evades desperation; his work stands for beauty and freedom and recognizes the reality of the imagination. Such language is necessary at all times to indicate the freedom inherent in art. And for this language of the imagination, Norman Junge created unmistakable and unforgettable images. "
“Norman Junge is one of the veterans of Cologne's art scene. He became known with illustrations not only for children's books , but also with bizarre and absurd picture stories . [...] The highlights in the exhibition certainly include Norman Junge's series of images from the representatives of German nonsense poetry such as Christian Morgenstern , Joachim Ringelnatz and Ernst Jandl - the draftsman feels related to them in spirit and nature. The same nonsense with a twisted logic can also be found in Junge's concrete sculptures, which are also shown in the exhibition. "
"Young condensed, simplified, shortened between the elementary block structure and uninhibited association. The joy of the effect, the temptation to build on the verge of harmless catastrophes, remains the most sophisticated form in cheerfulness. "
always higher (1996)
“The imaginative illustrations by Norman Junge turn a 36-page picture book into a small masterpiece that captivates with its wit and cleverness and will not only delight small reading friends - like Jandl's poem, which pays homage to the game with the enchanting poetry and is great fun . "
to be fifth (1997)
“For the picture book , Junge combined illustrations from one of his cartoons for Die Sendung mit der Maus . It accompanies Jandl's twelve-word counting rhyme, which thrives on the power of repetition, with minimal variations. The light cone of the swinging ceiling light sets additional accents. "
The Cold (2000)
"Boy, boy, one might say, dear draftsman Norman Junge, that’s class."
ottos pug (2001)
“Norman Junge has ingeniously and wickedly translated the scarcity and comedy of Jandl's language into a pictorial form: a grotesque that makes the absurd visible in everyday life. He reduced his stage design to a few props in order to give the two actors free space, and Mops is clearly the superior one who leads his master by the nose. The view into the small stage area remains consistently frontal as in the theater. In return, however, the room itself changes, depending on the mood and situation. Boy sometimes warps it into a nested structure without right angles, then tilts it to one side or lets its walls melt away. At the climax of the little drama, the illustrator bathes the picture, until then drawn in warm reddish-brown tones, in pale yellow-blue light, because "ottos pug pukes."
Alphabet with Draftsmen - The Beauties and the Beasts by Nikolaus Heidelbach and Norman Junge (2008)
“Here the Little Red Riding Hood with the basket, there - based on Ernst Jandl - Otto's puking pug , here the self-portrait of the brooding artist in a plaid shirt, there the monkey family in Sunday clothes. - The nibs in this ABC book by two brilliant artists are sharp. A fun dance on the alphabet. "
Children's Confusion Book (2008)
“In this way, an illustrator opens up new ways of understanding Joachim Ringelnatz's playful and bitter poems and fairy tales. Because Norman Young's absurd and profound illustrations encourage perseverance and joy of discovery to conquer texts that are more than 70 years old. At the same time, with their reduced, blue-dominated and transparent colors, they offer their own aesthetic pleasure. With the sailors and sea motifs that run through the book, Junge repeatedly makes clear references to the “language-loving” poet Ringelnatz. This is how Norman Junge succeeds in creating a book that not only offers children the texts of an important German author, but also the key to understanding them. "
“That is Norman Junge's art: that he does not depict Ringelnatz , but rather trains him. The book offers illustrated interpretations of the texts. And even if death, which plays a major role here, is not directly depicted, the grandfather's empty armchair, on which glasses and hat are still lying and two canes are leaning next to it, is impressive enough - especially since there is still a ring of smoke in the top right blown away. Is that the soul or just the last bit of your grandfather's cigar? To avoid misunderstandings: The texts and pictures are more cheeky than melancholy - and congenial. Did we know Ringelnatz like that before? No, we didn't know. But we should get to know as soon as possible. "
