Sarah Crossan (* 1981 in Dublin ) is an Irish writer . Since 2012 she has written several novels for young people , most of which are also available in German translation.

Her most important books include The Weight of Water , 2012 (German The Language of Water , 2013) and One , 2015 (German Eins , 2016). For her literary work she was awarded the Lynx of the Month (February 2014) and the UKLA Book Award (2013), was on the shortlist of the renowned Carnegie Medal three times (2013, 2015 and 2016) and was also for the German Youth Literature Prize (2014) nominated. The national and international press described her work as "image-rich free verse that packs an emotional punch" ( Kirkus Review ) and "honest, unapologetic realism from a diverse perspective not often seen in fiction for teens" ( Kirkus Review ) .

Life

Sarah Crossan was born in Dublin. She spent her childhood and youth in Ireland and England. She studied philosophy and literature at the University of Warwick , where she graduated in 1999. She then began training to be a theater and English teacher at the University of Cambridge .

Crossan moved to New York for seven years and taught at a small private school there. In addition, tried to promote creative writing in schools. In addition to teaching, she worked as a freelance editor and book critic. In 2003 Crossan completed her Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Warwick and began writing books. In 2010 she received an Edward Albee Scholarship and spent a lot of time in Montauk , near New York, to work on her debut novel "The Weight of Water".

Today Crossan lives in Hertfordshire , England with her husband and daughter .

Literary work

The Weight of Water (2012) / The Language of Water (2013)

Crossan's first verse novella and debut novel The Weight of Water was published on January 5, 2012 by the English publisher Bloomsbury Publishing in English and comprises 240 pages. The book was illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. The German translation was published on July 24, 2013 by Mixtvision Verlag and comprises 232 pages. Cordula Setsman did the translation. The Weight of Water has been published in Poland and New Zealand , among others .

The Weight of Water was nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize (2014) and was awarded the Lynx of the Month (February 2014). In 2013 it was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal . The Weight of Water received an overall positive response from the press. The Kirkus Review describes Crossan's writing style as "image-rich free verses that packs an emotional punch" ( Kirkus Review , June 1, 2013). The Publishers Weekly praised "Crossan's verse packs a punch as she examines the power did difference-but so determination-can wield" Isabelle Erler said in. The Mirror : "It is with these words and the language that Sarah Crossan formed from it, opens up a novel-like space with many pictures, delicate, poetic, exciting and very dense. "

On May 19, 2014, Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Publishing published an audio book version of the English version of the book, which was read by Susie Riddell.

On May 10, 2016, The Weight of Water premiered as a play at the Theater an der Parkaue in Berlin , directed by Sylvia Sobottka.

Breathe (2012) / Breathe - Trapped Under Glass (2013)

Crossan's second youth novel Breathe was published on October 2, 2012 by the American publisher Greenwillow in English and comprises 373 pages. The German translation was published on March 1, 2013 by dtv Verlagsgesellschaft and comprises 432 pages. Birgit Niehaus translated the book into German. Breathe has been published in England , among others .

The book tells the story of a world in which there is no longer any natural oxygen. Few people manage to survive under a huge glass dome by making artificial oxygen. But not everyone can afford oxygen. There is a strictly hierarchical two-class society and so a group of rebels begins to fight against the oxygen monopoly. Resist can be assigned to various literary genres. In addition to being classified as a youth novel, it has characteristics of the science fiction genre.

Among other things, Breathe was named Book of the Month (August 2013) by the German Academy for Children's and Young Adult Literature . It was also nominated for the Carnegie Medal in 2014 . Breathe received an overall positive response from the press. The Kirkus Review called it "An imaginative, convincing dystopian world dominates this intriguing debut" ( Kirkus Review , September 1, 2012).

In February 2014, Audible Studios for Bloomsbury published an audio book version of the English version of the book, which was read by Anna Parker-Naples.

Resist (2013) / Resist - Escape to Sequoia (2013)

Crossan's youth novel Resist was published on October 8, 2013 by the American publisher Greenwillow in English and comprises 368 pages. It is the second part of the Breathe duology. The German translation was published by dtv Verlagsgesellschaft on November 1, 2013 and comprises 368 pages. Nina Frey did the translation. Resist has been published in England, among other places.

The fight against the oxygen monopoly continues. After the rebel grove in the pod was destroyed, the youngsters Alina, Quinn and Bea are banished and have to flee. Alina lost her home in the rebellion and Bea lost her family. On the run, they are separated from one another and try to find support for Sequoia on their own. Resist can be assigned to various literary genres. In addition to being classified as a youth novel , it has characteristics of the science fiction genre.

Resist received an overall positive response from the press. The Kirkus Review called it “An above-average dystopia; intelligent and absorbing. ”( Kirkus Review , October 1, 2013).

In 2014, Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Publishing published an audio book edition of the English version of the book, which was read by Anna Parker-Naples.

Apple and Rain (2014)

Crossan's fourth book for young people, Apple and Rain , was published on August 14, 2014 by Bloomsbury Publishing in English and comprises 330 pages. The book was published in German translation in 2016. Apple and Rain has been published in America, among others.

The book tells the story of the girl Apple, whose mother left her eleven years ago. Now it suddenly returns and Apple hopes to finally get answers to the questions it has been asking itself over the years. Instead, the return messes up Apple's life even more.

Apple and Rain was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal (2015) and the IBW Book Award (2015) , among others . Apple and Rain received an overall positive response from the press. The Irish Times commented, "[...] Crossan's skill as a writer is at its most pronounced, contributing to a portrait of adolescence that is subtle and humane." (Robert Dunbar, 23 August 2014).

On February 5, 2015, Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Publishing published an audio book version of the English version of the book, which was read by Susie Riddell.

One (2015) / One (2016)

Sarah Crossan's second verse novella One was published on August 27, 2015 by Bloomsbury Publishing in English and comprises 448 pages. The German translation was published by Mixtvision Verlag on January 29, 2016 and comprises 424 pages. Cordula Setsman translated the book into German. One has been published in Denmark and America , among others .

The book tells the story of the Siamese twins Tippi and Grace, who grew together at the hips. They try to lead a completely normal life, but they not only have to struggle with health and family problems, but also with exclusion. One can be assigned to different literary genres. In addition to being classified as a verse novella , it can also be classified as a book for young people .

One was the winner of the Carnegie Medal 2016. In the features section it was described, among other things, as "honest, unapologetic realism from a diverse perspective not often seen in fiction for teens." ( Kirkus Review of June 10, 2015).

On August 27, 2015, Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Publishing published an audio book version of the English version of the book, which was read by Stephanie Cannon.
