FK Waechter (2001)

Friedrich Karl Waechter (born November 3, 1937 in Danzig ; † September 16, 2005 in Frankfurt am Main ) - as the artist FK Waechter - was a German draftsman , caricaturist , cartoonist and author of children's books and plays .

Life

The Monster Specht , a sculpture based on the artist's designs in the Frankfurt city forest

Waechter was born in Danzig as the son of a teacher and grew up in the not far away town of Tiegenhof . His father was killed in World War II in 1941 . In the winter of 1944/45, the mother and the three children fled on board the netsetter Najade across the Baltic Sea to Warnemünde and finally ended up in Sahms ( Schleswig-Holstein ).

Friedrich Karl Waechter attended the Lauenburg School of Academics in Ratzeburg , where his talent for drawing showed up early on. A year before graduating from high school, he left school to study commercial graphics at the Alsterdamm art school in Hamburg . After graduating, Waechter worked for the Upper Baden advertising expedition in Freiburg im Breisgau . During this time he was already drawing cartoons for the magazine twen . Having become aware of him through these drawings, the founding editorial team of the satirical magazine sent him a zero number of the magazine. Waechter criticized the layout and presentation of the magazine and sent his own suggestions - with the success that he was employed at Pardon as head of layout. From April 1962, Waechter worked for pardon and designed the famous title character for the first issue, a little devil who is smiling and lifting his hat. It was here that Waechter developed his talent for comic cartoons. Together with Robert Gernhardt and FW Bernstein , he designed the regular nonsense pages Welt im Spiegel from 1964 . Waechter later worked as a freelance artist in Frankfurt am Main . Due to content-related differences with the editor-in-chief of pardon , Waechter's interest in articles flagged; Children's books temporarily became his main field of activity. In 1975, after a request from Zeitmagazin s for a regular cartoon article , he started enjoying drawing again and, according to his own statement, began to develop his own style. In 1979 he was one of the founding members of the satirical magazine Titanic , for which he worked until 1992, while at the same time he was mainly active as a playwright and director. He also held visiting professorships at art academies.

Waechter succumbed to lung cancer on the night of September 16, 2005 at the age of 67 . He left behind his wife and three grown sons. His grave is in the Frankfurt main cemetery .

Waechter's son Philip Waechter (* 1968) also works as an illustrator of children's books.

Waechter found no role models in German cartoon art of the early 1960s. Instead, he became enthusiastic about American cartoonists like Saul Steinberg . Together with FW Bernstein, Robert Gernhardt , Eckhard Henscheid , Chlodwig Poth , Bernd Eilert , Peter Knorr and Hans Traxler , he belonged to the New Frankfurt School .

Waechter drew for twen , pardon , Titanic and Zeit magazine, among others , wrote children's books and cartoon books for adults, as well as a large number of plays. In 1992 he officially said goodbye to the satirical art of drawing in order to devote himself more to children's theater. In total, over seventy miniatures, short dramas and full-length theater pieces were created.

His first independent literary success was the Anti-Struwwelpeter (1970), an anti-authoritarian parody on the Struwwelpeter . Waechter later distanced himself from the book because he found it “too woodcut-like”.

Funny art

FK Waechter drew a series with objects in trees and bequeathed them to the city of Frankfurt. These works of comic art have been gradually artistically implemented and permanently exhibited since December 2005 along the Grün-Gürtel-Rundwanderweg in Frankfurt's Green Belt . The Komische Kunst project in the Frankfurt Green Belt was created in collaboration with the Frankfurt Caricatura Museum for Komische Kunst .

In addition to the known owl in Norwegian sweaters that are already the book looks likely again no pig was first seen nor are thick caterpillar, the squirrel king, the monster children, the monster woodpecker, the Pinkel tree and the Struwwelpeter to look at.

At the beginning of the 1980s, along with Robert Gernhardt and FW Bernstein, FK Waechter was one of the founders and sponsors of the Kassel CARICATURA - gallery for comic art and is regarded as their mentor. For this reason, the 100th exhibition in September 2015 dealt with his works.

estate

Waechter's complete graphic work comprises around 3400 works. Following a decision by the Waechter's heirs in December 2007, the entire estate was given to the German Museum for Caricature and Drawing, Wilhelm Busch in Hanover, half of it as a donation. The other half was acquired with the support of the state and numerous foundations from the Wilhelm-Busch-Gesellschaft as the sponsor of the museum. The decision caused a lack of understanding, as his adopted home of Frankfurt (especially the museum for comic art there ) came away empty-handed. The decision was justified by the widow Waechter's will with the will of the deceased, in which he had decreed that his work “must remain together, worked out and made available to the public”.
