Oliver Maria Schmitt (born April 27, 1966 in Heilbronn ) is a German writer . From 1995 to 2000 he was editor-in-chief of the satirical magazine Titanic .

Life

From 1981 to 1987 Schmitt was the singer and guitarist of the Heilbronn punk band Tiefschlag . In 1988 he ran as an independent list candidate with the slogan " Take part , elect Oliver Schmitt" in the elections for the Baden-Württemberg state parliament and in 1991 in the Heilbronn mayor elections. In both elections he received 0.2% of the vote.

Together with Rolf Schall, he staged exhibitions, vernissages and installations with works by the invented artist Herbert F. Kietznick, the "master of mystical bruitism" from 1985 to 1991.

Schmitt studied rhetoric and art history in Tübingen and Leeds . From 1991 to 1994 he edited the literary magazine Unser Huhn in Tübingen together with Clemens Kieser and Bernd Kasparak and wrote several radio plays for the Süddeutscher Rundfunk and Südwestfunk .

From 1995 to 2000 Schmitt was editor-in-chief of the satirical magazine Titanic . Together with Arne Nannestad, he wrote the libretti for the musicals FlachDachKrach - Eine Bauhaus-Revue (world premiere in 1999 in Weimar ) and I want to hold your Hendl , which was premiered in 2001 in Stuttgart (music: Markus Wessel).

Together with Thomas Gsella and Martin Sonneborn, Schmitt is a member of the Titanic Boy Group , has been honorary chairman of PARTEI since it was founded in 2004 and has been co-editor of Titanic since 2006 . He publishes regularly in Titanic , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Süddeutsche Zeitung , daily newspaper , concrete , Der Spiegel and Die Zeit . He has been a columnist at GEO Saison since May 2013 .

From August 2010 to May 2011 he produced the monthly video blog Die 1000 Wunder von Frankfurt for the city website frankfurt.de.

Schmitt ran for the office of Lord Mayor of Frankfurt am Main in 2012 and achieved the best election result of the PARTY in a large city to date with 1.8% of the vote. The name of his program was "9.5 theses for Frankfurt - and none for Offenbach ".

He is the author of the title page and the back of the Titanic edition from July 2012, which Pope Benedict XVI. with a dirty cassock and, alluding to the " Vatileaks " affair, the headline: Hallelujah in the Vatican - The leak has been found! . After the publication, the legal representative of Pope Benedict XVI was asked to cease and desist. On August 30, the Holy See withdrew its application for an injunction against the paper.

Schmitt lives in Frankfurt am Main.
