Mayor election in Frankfurt am Main 2012

In the election of the mayor of Frankfurt am Main in 2012 , the SPD candidate Peter Feldmann was elected mayor of Frankfurt in a runoff election. Due to the resignation of Petra Roth, the election took place a year earlier than planned.

Candidates

The Interior Minister of Hesse, Boris Rhein, ran for the CDU . The Greens , who together with the CDU formed the Frankfurt city government, sent the environment officer Rosemarie Heilig into the race. In the SPD, Peter Feldmann was able to prevail against the former member of the state parliament Michael Paris . Member of the state parliament Janine Wissler stood for the Left Party . Another prominent applicant was the satirist Oliver Maria Schmitt , who ran for Die PARTTEI . In addition:

The FDP did not put up its own candidate and supported Boris Rhein. The topics of the election campaign included the poor housing situation in Frankfurt and the expansion of Frankfurt Airport .

Runoff

Since no candidate had an absolute majority in the first ballot, a run-off election between Boris Rhein and Peter Feldmann took place on March 25, 2012. The Frankfurt Green leadership supported Boris Rhein, which led to internal party conflicts. Many voters who had voted Holy in the first ballot apparently voted for Feldmann in the runoff election.
