prehistory

The Caricatura institution was founded in 1984 as a non-profit association to support cultural life in Kassel . Since 1995 she has been running the Caricatura Museum of Comic Art in the KulturBahnhof Kassel .

history

Since April 2000, an independent Caricatura department has been working in the Historical Museum in Frankfurt in order to establish permanent recognition of this art in Frankfurt and to prepare the establishment of a museum for comic art in Frankfurt. The Caricatura Museum was opened under Achim Frenz as founding director on October 1st, 2008, but remained organizationally subordinate to the Historical Museum. It is located in the lavishly converted canvas house in Frankfurt's old town at Weckmarkt 17. The Caricatura Museum has been an independent institution since April 1, 2019; This was preceded by a rift between museum director Achim Frenz and Jan Gerchow , the superior director of the historical museum.

The permanent exhibition includes works by FW Bernstein , Robert Gernhardt , Chlodwig Poth , Hans Traxler and FK Waechter ; the museum's own media department offers a wide range of information about the literary and cinematic work of the New Frankfurt School. In addition, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions with exhibits from other representatives of the comic art, such as the 2011 Haderer exhibition . Furthermore, it organizes readings, book presentations and the like at irregular intervals.

The landmark of the Caricatura is a bronze elk sculpture with a trench coat, vest and hat , designed by Hans Traxler, standing in front of the building . The sandstone base of the sculpture bears a bronze plaque with the names of the eight most important representatives of the New Frankfurt School as well as the motto coined by FW Bernstein "The harshest critics of the moose used to be themselves".
