Frank Hoppmann (born April 2, 1975 in Lingen ) is a German draftsman , caricaturist and illustrator .

Life

Hoppmann grew up in Emsbüren in the Emsland and attended the Georgianum grammar school in Lingen (Ems) . After graduating from high school in 1994, he studied design with a focus on drawing , illustration and printmaking at the Münster University of Applied Sciences . During his studies he devoted himself extensively to drawing, worked a. a. as a court draftsman for television companies and daily newspapers. In 1997 he published his first drawings in the satirical magazine Eulenspiegel .

In 2002 he got his diploma with the topic "Liquor lover has many faces", a satirical , socially critical series with over 50 large-format portraits and around 200 sketches of drunk women and men. He has been a freelance draftsman since 2002 .

In 2005 he received the eoplauen award in Plauen . There the first encounter with the draftsman Tomi Ungerer took place, who received the main prize. Today a picture by Hoppmann hangs in the Museum Tomi Ungerer-International Center for Illustration in Strasbourg . It is a portrait of Tomi Ungerer.

In 2007 he received the artist grant of the Emsländische Landschaft eV; associated with this were longer working stays at Schloss Clemenswerth and in a Nordhorn city park villa. Exhibitions and participation in exhibitions at home and abroad followed.

In 2008 FW Bernstein invited him to take part in his anniversary exhibition for his 70th birthday.

In autumn 2012 he was honored with a ribbon in the series "Masters of the Comic Art". This library presents the most important German-speaking artists who have accompanied current events and our society since around 1950 with pencil, brush and verbal power, explaining them and recording the comic with the necessary seriousness. This puts him in a row next to FK Waechter , Chlodwig Poth , Ernst Kahl , Gerhard Glück , Marie Marcks , Robert Gernhardt , Rudi Hurzlmeier , FW Bernstein and Hans Traxler .

In 2015, the Berlin-based Schaltzeit Verlag developed the children's book "The Adventures of Pit and Peggs - The Journey to the Flower Parade" in collaboration with the author Dörte Grimm and Frank Hoppmann. Originally it was a children's story for a cartoon from 1936, conceived by the Jewish painter Felix Nussbaum together with his friend Michael Loewen. The cartoon with the characters Pit and Peggs, however, never came about. But 29 black and white photographs of the original drawings have been preserved.

Frank Hoppmann lives and works in Münster . He draws for journals and magazines, including Die Welt am Sonntag , Rolling Stone magazine, satirical magazine Eulenspiegel , Manager Magazin , and other publications. a. for the Stern or the Süddeutsche Zeitung .
