Julia Kaergel (* 1965 in Hamburg ) is a German book illustrator and draftsman.

Life

Kaergel grew up in Hamburg. From 1992 to 1999 she studied at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in the field of design, illustration and communication design, illustration with Rüdiger Stoye and in the field of painting with Eun Nim Ro and Dieter Glasmacher . She completed her studies with a diploma. After completing her studies, she moved into a studio in the former Palminwerke in Wilhelmsburg as a freelance artist. Since 2001 she has been giving painting workshops for artists and students, children and adults. In 2004 she was at the foundation of the artists' group m.art.a involved. In 2005 she organized a painting workshop for children and lecturers at the Goethe Institute in Beirut and in 2008 had a six-week teaching assignment in Sudan for local artists. She has lived in Schleswig-Holstein since 2008. In 2010 she worked for the Goethe Institute in Jakarta , Indonesia. In 2011 she gave workshops in Bangladesh, Dhaka , Indonesia and Yogjakarta . In 2013 her workshop tour took her to Seoul , Beijing , Donnguan , Guangzhou , Hong Kong . In 2013 she held events at the AFCC book festivals in Singapore and Jumpstart in New Delhi.

Her illustrations, drawings, large-format woodcuts, objects and books were shown in exhibitions. For the show with the mouse , ARD and Siebenstein , ZDF several aminated cartoons were made. She uses the technique of the laying trick, in which figures and objects are broken down into individual parts and then animated. For the WDR Kaergel stage sets created for the family program that were inserted in the blue-box method during the broadcast.

Kaergel has also worked as an artist for computer games such as "Mein Pferdehof" and "Mein Pferdehof 2". She uses both digital and traditional techniques for her creations.

Works

Kaergel has published 30 books for children and adults and designed numerous book covers and games. Individual titles have been translated into other languages. Her books have been awarded, among other things, the “Schnabelsteher Preis” of the city of Braunschweig and a nomination for the youth literature prize with the picture book Mimi by Doris Dörrie .
