History and work
The association was founded on March 9, 1947 as the Association Française de la Critique de Cinéma (AFCC). In 1981 it was converted into a professional association and from then on appeared under the new name Syndicat Français de la Critique de Cinéma (SFCC). In recognition of the work of members from the television industry, the name was officially renamed Syndicat Français de la Critique de Cinéma et des Films de Télévision in 2004 , although the organization is still known today by its abbreviated name. The association is based in Paris . The current president is Jean-Jacques Bernard.
The aim of the SFCC is to represent the professional interests of its members, to advocate freedom of criticism and information and filmmaking. With more than 260 members, it also functions as the national section of the international film journalists' association Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique (FIPRESCI). In cooperation with FIPRESCI, the SFCC sends journalists to juries at international film festivals . In France, the association sends members to juries at the Arras , Biarritz , Poitiers , Toulouse and Trouville film festivals . French and international filmmaking is recognized by the SFCC by awarding several awards ( Prix du Syndicat Français de la Critique ). In the year it was founded, a film prize ( Prix Méliès ) named after the French film pioneer Georges Méliès was launched. Since then, a jury of members has used this to honor the best national cinema production of the year. Since 1967 the Prix Léon Moussinac , named after the French film critic of the same name (1890–1964), has honored the best foreign film production published in France. This was followed by categories for the best short film (since 1973), the best debut film (since 2000) and the best French co-production in French ( Film singulier francophone , since 2008). The association also awards prizes in the categories of literature (since 1978), DVD-Video and Blu-ray publications (since 2005) and television (since 2005).
