Reviews

The time of miracles

  • FAZ : "It's just strange how the award-winning youth book author Bondoux on the one hand transforms the world of refugees, the random communities and the terrible fate they share into a folklore with strange uncles and fortune-telling aunts, homemade violins and fishing adventures, and you think: Sure, It's also a book that is supposed to captivate its readers first, so it might not matter if a few of the motifs touch the kitsch more often. On the other hand, the question that Anne-Laure Bondoux asks her young readers is existential asks them sensitively, one does not even hear them out: What, this is the question, if you weren't born in France (or elsewhere in fortified Europe), but in a country at war, among people without a passport, without a job, without a roof over your head and a door that you can close behind you? Or, worse still: If you were born French and even had your passport, but through an accident in a La nd stranded in war? The time of miracles tells of a random, unjust world and how the people who are born into it use all their strength to escape from it or to make it more bearable. The fact that Anne-Laure Bondoux can turn such a political (and very French!) Book into an adventure is great, but she only finds this dynamic late, in the second half of the book, which grows more and more without losing its tone to change."
  • Die Zeit : "In contrast, Anne-Laure Bondoux, the successful and versatile author of children's and young people's books, born in 1971, has to be admired. Her story is not a documentation; with a very problematic rebel past and a little boy set out to give the child a chance to survive in a free country. [...] Bondoux and her good translator Maja von Vogel manage to capture the feelings of Blaise and Gloria to make it the focus and explanatory model of a political drama. The reader receives an authentic, long-lasting picture of the suffering, but above all the miracles of a successful liberation. "
  • Süddeutsche Zeitung : "The author composed it carefully, in a refined mixture of detailed description and melancholy dialogues and punch lines. A very French, bittersweet mélange that is sometimes almost too calculated. You can escape this feeling - and the heartbreaking one End - at least not. And so this youth novel manages to draw attention to the people of flesh and blood who hide behind the abstract refugee numbers. It tells of the motives of these people, of the extent of their misery, of the tremendous power which leads them to stubbornly overcome all the borders of Western Europe, whether on foot, by boat or in a pig truck. And it invokes the power of storytelling. Even if the pure truth is often close to the bold lie - the only important thing is: a good one History can save lives. "
  • Jury of the German Youth Literature Prize : "Strong narrative, with tension and feeling, playing virtuoso, Anne-Laure Bondoux shows her readers a world they are unfamiliar with in all clarity, without lapsing into dramatic gimmicks. Maja von Vogel reflects this in her sensitive translation. With Die The time of miracles, the author has prepared an important topic for a younger readership with a great love for storytelling. "
  • Anne-Laure Bondoux at the Comédie du Livre 2009 in Montpellier
Deutschlandradio : " The time of miracles is a wonderful book because it tells of a great human drama in simple, clear sentences and an unsentimental tone. How much the narrator involved in the event is touched by the fate of the characters can only be seen between the two Lines, in cautious remarks and hints. Small gestures replace big words, convincing pictures reflect his split feelings. There are many miracles in this novel: wonderful coincidences, surprises and survival stories. One of the miracles is that Koumail and Gloria end up after years It is also a miracle that Anne-Laure Bondoux has managed to write a book that is as full of emotions and vital energy as the music of the Sinti and Roma, where Koumail and Gloria are temporarily guests: sad and cheerful, melancholy and happy at the same time.
