Bárður Oskarsson (born July 18, 1972 in Tórshavn ) is a Faroese children's author and illustrator. He is considered one of the most famous children's book authors in the Faroese language .

life and work

Bárður Oskarsson started drawing at a young age. His first works appeared in the Faroese children's and youth magazine Barnablaðið (today Strok ).

In 1992 he illustrated his first book, Undir tussafjøllum ("Under the Troll Mountains "), which his grandfather Oskar Hermannsson had written. Since then he has illustrated numerous other books by Faroese authors. He also took part in several art exhibitions in Denmark and the Faroe Islands .

Bárður Oskarsson has been writing and illustrating books himself since 2004. His work is characterized by his minimalist Nordic style with little text and simple and impressive images that are often reminiscent of comic style. He lives in Denmark.

Awards

His work has received several literary prizes and has been translated into numerous languages. In 2006 he was the first Faroese to be awarded the Children's and Youth Book Prize of the West Nordic Council . His children's books Ein hundur, ein ketta og ein mús , Stríðið um tað góða grasið and Wilbert were included in the renowned shortlist The White Ravens of the International Youth Library (IJB) Munich.

His children's book about dying, Das platte Rabbit , which Oskarsson also illustrated, was published in German and received the LUCHS Prize for children's and young people's literature in November 2013 . In 2016 he was nominated for the Children's and Young People's Literature Prize of the Nordic Council . Bárður Oskarsson's children's book Wilbert was included in the list of honors of the International Board of Trustees for Young Adult Books (IBBY) in January 2018 .

For his children's book Træið ("The Tree") Oskarsson received both the Children's and Young People's Literature Prize of the Nordic Council and the Children's and Young People's Literature Prize of the West Nordic Council; the book was shortlisted for The White Ravens in 2018 .
