Roberto Innocenti (born February 16, 1940 near Florence ) is an Italian illustrator and author.

Life

Innocenti is self-taught. At the age of 18 he went to Rome and worked in an animation studio. Innocenti illustrated an edition of Nutcracker and Mouse King by ETA Hoffmann , Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi and Das Medaillon by Andrea Camilleri and Moshe Kahn .

He is best known for his picture book Rosa Weiss (1986), which is counted as the first picture book on the subject of the Holocaust . This work not only generated a whole wave of picture books on the Holocaust, but also a lively debate both for and against the treatment of the Shoah with children. After Rosa Weiss, Innocenti illustrated another picture book on this subject. Erika's story was published in Germany in 2002. The texts are by Ruth Vander Zee . The influence of his second Holocaust picture book can by no means be compared with that of the first work.
