Jürgen Spohn (born June 10, 1934 in Leipzig ; † June 18, 1992 in Berlin ) was a German graphic artist who is best known as a children's book author and illustrator .

Live and act

Jürgen Spohn studied at the Kunsthochschule Kassel and published his first picture book Der Spielbaum in 1966 .

The focus of his work are books in which he plays with language and images. With this combination and new graphic designs, he reached children and adults alike.

In 1981 he received the German Youth Literature Prize on the basis of the jury's reasoning: “Spohn is a moralist like Erich Kästner ... The reader senses that there is no know-it-all at work, but someone who loves reading and the environment and fellow human beings therefore must insist on certain claims. "

Spohn also designed posters and a postage stamp for the Czechoslovak Post, which appeared in 1989. He donated the children's book prize “The Magic Pen”, which is sponsored by the International Youth Library . He also gained worldwide recognition as a photographer.

Spohn lived in Berlin from 1961 and was professor of graphic design at the Berlin University of the Arts .
