Christopher Hill (historian)

John Edward Christopher Hill (born February 6, 1912 in York , † February 23, 2003 ) was a British Marxist historian . From 1965 to 1978 Hill was a Masters at Balliol College , Oxford . He was a historian at the University of Oxford before and after doing his master’s degree .

Life

Hill was in 1911, the son of Methodists from the middle class was born in York. There he also attended St Peter's School . Out of this he was recruited at the age of 16 by Vivian Galbraith at Balliol College. It was in Oxford that Hill first came into contact with Marxist ideas and adopted this political point of view. In 1935 Hill joined the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) and spent a year in the Soviet Union . After returning to Great Britain from the Soviet Union in 1936, Hill began his academic career as an assistant professor, and two years later became a tutor in modern history. In 1940 he joined the Army , but during the Second World War he was not on the frontline , but was deployed as a lieutenant and major in Oxford and at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office . In 1957, a year after the crackdown on the Hungarian uprising, he left the British Communist Party . After the war, Hill began to publish a variety of books. His academic career also culminated between 1965 and 1978 when Hill was a Masters at Balliol College, which is part of the University of Oxford. He was a member a. a. the British Academy (since 1966), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1973) and the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (since 1989).
