For Bayerischer Rundfunk he wrote skits , radio plays , features and documentary programs , in which he often directed himself. He also wrote poems, plays and non-fiction books, mostly with a humorous note. At the Lore Bronner stage in Munich he was seen as Higgins in Shaw's Pygmalion .
Backhaus was involved in several entertainment films in the 1950s and 1960s as a screenwriter, actor or director, sometimes under the pseudonym Gregor Trass . He left behind over 1,500 pictures, including oil paintings , watercolors , gouaches , etchings and caricatures .
