occupation

Salem Aleikum is a German comedy film from 1959 directed by Géza von Cziffra with Peter Alexander in the lead role.

action

Peter Karmann is a teacher for oriental languages. The hobby musician performs in a bar every evening and is therefore often tired in class. When this is noticed by his superiors, he is unceremoniously fired. Since he had met his former friend Henri Holler in the bar the night before, who is now the manager of a ballet group and who had offered him to hire him for his group's Orient tour, he now accepts his offer.

In El Bara, Peter is mistaken for the sought-after smuggler king, Jack Castillo, who looks very much like him. Various unpleasant surprises are the result. With the help of the beautiful Marcella and the dog Struppi, Peter survives all difficulties.

background

The film was produced in the Hamburg studio of the real film . The film title refers to the Arabic greeting as-salāmu ʿalaikum (German: "Peace be with you"). The cinema release in Germany was on December 3, 1959, in Austria on January 1, 1960.

Songs

  • All my life is music (Peter Alexander)
  • A small house by the blue lake (Peter Alexander and Margrit Imlau)
  • Penny Swing (Peter Alexander)

Reviews

“Comedy with Peter Alexander, poor in story and execution; what is probably meant as a parody in the style of American grotesque films is exhausted in flat dialogues. "

“After So A Millionaire, it's hard to find another banal musical mix-up comedy that Geza von Cziffra directed with Peter Alexander. Instead of the Riviera, the exotic North Africa now forms the attractive backdrop, in which Alexander ties up again with Germaine Damar while he sings songs like 'My whole life is music' and the 'Penny Swing'.
