Benno Gellenbeck

Benno Gellenbeck (born October 13, 1910 in Gladbeck ; † September 6, 1974 in Hamburg ) was a German film and theater actor. Due to his distinctive voice, he was also a popular radio play speaker .

Life

Benno Gellenbeck was a television actor from the very beginning. Together with Marga Maasberg , Josef Sieber and Alf Pankratz, he stood in front of the camera on December 25, 1952, the first official broadcast day of German television, in the production of Silent Night, Holy Night .

Under the direction of Gustaf Gründgens he played at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus . The productions there of Othello , Hamlet and Faust II appeared on speech records at Deutsche Grammophon . In addition to his theatrical work, Gellenbeck could also be seen in some German feature films, for example in Pension Schöller or I count my worries daily with Peter Alexander and Hans Paetsch . In 1951 he played in the scandalous film The Sinner at the side of Hildegard Knef and Gustav Fröhlich . In the 1960s he was seen in various television series such as the Port Police , Cliff Dexter and John Klings Abenteuer .

As a narrator, he was convincing in the EUROPA radio play by Moby Dick , in which he spoke to Captain Ahab. He was also heard there as Odysseus , Sindbad , Gott or in various Karl May settings as Old Firehand.

Due to his powerful voice, Gellenbeck was also used as a voice actor. He spoke Herbert Lom in Ladykillers , Sean Connery in Duel at the Wheel or Peter Finch in The Heart of All Things . In the Edgar Wallace film The Frog with the Mask you can sometimes hear him as the dubbing voice of Joachim Fuchsberger . Gellenbeck also excelled as a singer.

In 1974 Benno Gellenbeck died in Hamburg at the age of 63.
