Der Czardas-König (The Emmerich-Kalman-Story) is a German film biography by Harald Philipp from 1958. It deals with the musical background of the youth of the composer Emmerich Kálmán .

action

Emmerich Kálmán grew up in a rich family in the countryside in Hungary. He is friends with the gypsy girl Ilonka and loves the rich count's daughter Helene from an early age. When the Kálmán family became impoverished and the bailiff became a guest in the house, their former friends stayed away too. Only Ilonka stands by Emmerich.

Fifteen years later, Emmerich lives with his mother in Budapest. According to the will of the uncle who finances the family, he is supposed to study law, but he turns to the piano. The uncle retires as a donor and Emmerich now earns his living playing the piano and Ilonka sings. He is also writing a symphony. Through the mediation of the tenor Janos Hegedüsch, who heard him play in a bar, Emmerich was allowed to present his symphony to the influential music publisher Körmendy, but he was only interested in operettas. Hegedüsch's friend, the librettist Laszlo Szegedy, commissioned Emmerich to write an operetta for him. The resulting gypsy primate premiered a short time later - Janos and Ilonka sing the main roles - and is a great success. Emmerich is brought to the Theater an der Wien by Wilhelm Kordas, together with Janos, Ilonka and Laszlo , where he celebrates further successes. Among other things, the circus princess is performed. Helene, who is now married to Count Rieden, also appears at the premiere and the subsequent celebration. Emmerich falls for her, but the affair is soon ended by Comte Rieden. Emmerich withdraws and writes the uninspired operetta Miss Susi , which is a failure.

Emmerich thinks about his skills. He finds a new love in Vera, the cloakroom, which finances her dance training with her work. He composes the operetta Die Csárdásfürstin and wants to announce his engagement to Vera after the premiere. Shortly before the premiere, Ilonka visits him and tells him that she will go to America with Janos after the premiere. She realized that Emmerich would never reciprocate her feelings. Emmerich says goodbye to her and Vera, who comes to visit Emmerich, misunderstands the situation. At the premiere of the Csárdásfürstin she also learns during a break that Emmerich wants to announce his engagement after the premiere. She thinks he wants to become engaged to Ilonka and leaves the performance in the middle of a dance performance. Emmerich looks for her backstage and can clear up the misunderstanding. All those involved appear together to the roaring final applause.

production

The Czardas King was filmed from May to July 1958 in the CCC Studios Berlin-Spandau. It had its premiere on August 15, 1958 at the World Games in Hanover .

The film is based on a manuscript by Curt Riess and Hans Wilhelm . Kálmán's widow Vera Kálmán actively supported the film. Various pieces from Kálmán's operettas can be heard in the film. Elma Karlowa's vocals are dubbed by Sári Barabás .

criticism

The lexicon of international film found that Kálmán's youth only serve “as a thin thread in a melody and revue potpourri from various works by the artist”.
