Friedrich Hiebel (born February 10, 1903 in Vienna , † October 16, 1989 in Dornach SO ) was an Austrian Germanist, anthroposophist , publicist and writer.

Life

As the son of a mathematics teacher, Friedrich Hiebel initially lived in Vienna and grew up in Reichenberg after his death . From the age of 15 he attended the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster . In 1921 he met Rudolf Steiner , at whose suggestion he studied German and history in Vienna. There he received his doctorate in 1928 with a thesis on Wilhelm von Schütz .

From 1929 he worked as a teacher at the Waldorf School, first in Essen and from 1930 in Stuttgart, also as an editor for the magazine Erziehungskunst . After the National Socialists came to power, he had to leave school in Germany in 1933 and went to Vienna in 1934 .

In 1939 he emigrated to the USA and worked for the next seven years in New York as a Waldorf teacher and editor of the magazine Education as an Art , then as a lecturer and professor of German studies at several universities. He made friends with numerous other emigrants such as Bruno Walter .

In 1961 he moved with his family - he had married in 1945 - to Dornach, where he was appointed to the board of the Anthroposophical Society by Albert Steffen in 1963 and, as its successor, he was in charge of the “Section for Fine Sciences” at the Goetheanum and in 1966 the editing and editing of the weekly Das Goetheanum , which he held until his death in 1989.
